I have an '00 Avy with stock JBL sounds and radio except for subs. replace the factory subs with aftermarket amp and subs(2 12"{in trunk}). I also have 6 LED strips on while car is on. So i was driving earlier, at a stop light, i notice the lights in the car dim when subs hit.
is this safe? What can I do to have the lights not dim at all?
and the amp is place on trunk mat(carpet) so it gets really hot, any suggesting to make it run cooler?
thats a no no, a cap puts even more strain on your electrical. do the big 3 if you havent already done so and maybe look into a optima yellow top, or if you have the cash look into a new alternator.

Swap amps, Get a digital, they use less amps for the same watts to the subs. I am a big fan of Alpines PDX series,,,, here is about the cheapest place I have found. http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAu..._PDX-1600.aspx
Or you could try putting in a cap, you will hear a lot of people say they don't do anything, but that hasn't been my experience. I had a couple of 12's in a system that would do just what you describe until I put a cap in the system.

How does adding more reserve capacity add more strain? You still will only get whatever the amp is able to deliver, it will just smooth out the dips during high load (big hits).
How so? You add a cap so when the system needs more power than your oem battery provides, the cap will supplement the battery.
Are you experiencing dimming constantly or only when you're bumping it loud?

When the subs hits loud, not constant dimming.

QFTW caps are only bandaids to the problem.

yeah the capacitor will do you no good, if you read around in different audio forums, they make it sound like thats what you need, but a lot of audiophiles will tell you a capacitor will do you more damage then good. Do the big 3 or get a high output alternator. My lights never dim and i'm running 1500 true watts and i also have a 200amp h/o alt.
If you are going to do a cap make sure you get the right one for your amp. Their capacity is measured in farads,I believe is 1/2 a farad is good for 500 watts. Rockford fosgate makes good ones, try and get 1 with a digital reader so you always know what's the voltage on it and install it as close to the amp as possible therefore theres less resistance in current flow. I got 1 for my dads 95 camry and problem solved, i did not have to do the big 3 upgrade because the load was not that heavy and the car stock wiring could handle the audio upgrade after the cap.
