Wife went to start car this am and no go. Key will turn but will not start. Seems to be stuck electrically in acc position. Ex: lights stayed on,,etc. Question is, what is likely culprit, the switch or the cyclinder?
I would ask the same question as TrailDust, does it go click click click or no sound at all, or am I hearing your correctly when you say the "key" is stuck at the acccessory point and won't let you go back to remove it?
When the key is turned the lights and everything come on, but no sounds at all. Once you turn pass the ACC position, the key moves freely. Doesn't act like a starter or battery issue, no clicking or anything. The dash lights and headlights stay on though no matter what. You can turn key to Off position and remove it but the dash lights stay on like the switch is stuck in the ACC position. Does this make any more sense? And the battery is a couple of years old, 12.60 volts reading with meter, so battery is good.
Is there an easy way to test the ignition switch? My Haynes manual says that the steering wheel, etc has to be removed. Is this true?
The wheel would have to be removed and although I am not a tech, the electrical portion of the ignition switch may be getting stuck. no way to test it without removing it and see what happens when you turn it.
The electrical portion is turned when the key is turned and sits on the other side of the mechanical part of the switch. My gut instinct tells me that your electrical ignition switch is bad and isn't release to disengage as your key does. In all likelyhood, the plastic portion of the switch is bad.
Ok folks, got the ignition switch out of car!! Without pulling steering wheel I might add! However, The piece that turns the switch is broken off. This would be the piece between the ignition cylinder and the ignition switch. Is the tube assembly replaceable? Help!!
