Mine is up to 145K miles, nothing but regular gas, no pinging. However, engines may differ as they age - try a couple of tanks of mid range gas and see if pinging goes away.

I used to park in a parking garage and on the uphill parts my engine would knock/ping, but the manual specifically says not to worry about it when it happens on an incline. The engine has all these computers in it and it should never ping otherwise. As I understand it, pinging is preignition because the fuel is combusting before it should and it can warp and disform engine parts and is serious. Mid test fuel is pointless. You need at least 91 test to prevent preignition.

Not true. Pre-ignition can be reduced/eliminated by a higher octane rating, and a slight case can be helped by going to mid-range at 89 octane.

Read the owners manual, available for free download at manufacturer's web site.
