Unhappy VVT causing lack of power?

I have a 2000 Avalon, with 206xxx miles that Sunday out of the blue, starting running rough. It idols low and rough, and it will not accelerate over 65 mph. This happened in one day, and there was no advanced warning. I have had this to two mechanics who have looked at it and can determine the code comes back as VVT but they cannot pinpoint the cause, and have reccommended the DEALER. UGH. Prior to this I had the check engine light code read, and it came back as catilletic converter. My question to you knowledgeable folks is can the converter be the cause of this. I have had an old chevy disabled with these exact same symptoms. I cant get anyone to give my hypothesis any credability. Someone help me out on this... I am not looking forward to going to the dealer.

a clogged cat will def cause ruff idle and speed limit. Start car and and see if cat is getting hotter then it should be, I have seen them actually glow cherry red when clogged

You had advanced warning, it's called a Check Engine Light.. What did you do about the cat converter check engine light? There are several vvt codes, which did you get? Both situations can cause the symptoms you described.

Since you haven't replied I hope youv'e taken it to the dealer. Valves opening and closing at the wrong time and an overheating converter can cause expensive damage!
