key will not go all the way in and steering wheel is not locked

My kids were playing in the car and now the key will not go all the way in. I thought at first they had put something into the ignition spot but I have looked in there and I do not see anything. I also noticed that the steering wheel is not in a locked position. I have tried to turn the wheel to get it to lock but it will not. Any help is really appreciated.

Disconnect the battery and try it.

Tried disconnecting the battery and still a no go. I have been able to get the steering wheel to finally lock. I have been working on the key and have been able to get it in but it still will not turn to any position. The key goes in real hard but still will not turn.
