Whine/whistle only on light load while driving.

Hi Everyone,

I've got a weird one here. Makes a whistle/whine sound only at low speeds under a light acceleration. If I'm going a few miles an hour and I lightly tap the gas pedal I can hear the loud whine, when I release the pedal it goes away. It only happens under acceleration while driving.

I'ts a 2002 Avalon with 185k on it. Runs great other than the noise. I checked the front tires for up/down movement and the bearings seem ok. Don't see anything in the drivebelts.

The only other thing the car does is after it's been sitting for a couple of days immediately on startup there's alot of valve noise for about 10 seconds. I don't think this is related though.

Any ideas are appreciated as I can't duplicate it without the vehicle moving.

thanks,

Joe

I'd check the tension on the drive belts and pulleys. Also, you might also check your air system, starting with the airbox and working your way downstream. If you find nothing you may have to consider other possibilities like CV joints, wheel bearings, transmission bearings, etc. Your diagnostic work is cut out for you.

Update: It turns out its the transmission. It started leaving me stranded. After about 15 minutes of driving it would all of a sudden start accelerating without going anywhere. At first I thought it had slipped into neutral while driving. I had to turn it off for 10 minutes and then it would drive like normal for a few miles. The whole time shifting perfect which is strange. then like on a timmer all of a sudden it slipps again.

Finally I know what it is! I've got a used trani for $500, just waiting for time to put it in.
