remote trunk programming

Hi,

I have a question about my keyless remote and this seems to be the best place to find out more info. I just purchased a 2001 Avalon and took it to my local Toyota dealer to inquire about a remote keyless entry because I did not receive a key fob with the car. The dealer referred me to an aftermarket place who sold me a remote and programmed it for $200. It locks and unlocks the doors fine, but it wouldn't open the trunk. When asked, they said that would be an extra $200. My question is, should it open the trunk, and if not, could I use the programming instructions found in other posts on this website? Thanks for taking the time to read this and I appreciate any and all feedback.

I think you are getting fleeced. See attached ebay link for a Toyota 3 button remote for $34; looks just like the remote for my 02 Avalon.

You should be able to program it from Toyota instructions, instructions on this site, or worst case take to a dealer.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, bobflood. I am not giving the dealer any more money. I think I will try the instructions found elsewhere on this site. I am just a little hesitant because of fear of screwing up the programming that the dealer installed to make the keyless remote work. They said that my car did not have some kind of "motor" in the trunk for the trunk release and that was why it was an extra $200. I think they are full of bull myself, and I plan on looking in the trunk later today. It has the trunk release at the bottom left of the driver's seat. The remote has 4 buttons on it. But the bottom 2 don't do anything.......yet.

First post said the dealer referred you elsewhere. Now you say dealer did the work.??????

Don't know about a 2001, but my kid's 99 has a lever/cable setup where you describe. My 2003 has an electric/button on the dash. The former would require the addition of an actuator.

That $200 charge for the remote was something that would cause me to look elsewhere.

OK - sounds like you have a manual trunk release if it is a pull lever on the floor. My 02 XLS has an electric release activated by a button on the dash. My mistake - $200 may not be out of line if they have to install an electric actuator for the trunk release.

Sorry if I was unclear in my first post. I went to the Toyota dealer and they referred me to an aftermarket accessory shop next door to them that performed all their remote and programming work for them. The accessory shop sold me the key fob and programmed it and charged me $200. The remote trunk opener is not that important for me to spend another $200 for. I may eventually find one in a wrecking yard or salvage yard one day, but until then I will just pull the release or use my key. Thanks guys.
