Avalon Check Engine Reset?

I have a 2000 Avalon XLS. The Check Engine light recently came on. After a diagnostic test from a local service center I was told I need to replace the Air Fuel Ratio Sensor (Diag Codes Reported: P1130 & P1135). They told me the part alone cost $680. However I called around and was told their is a Right and a Left sensor and each cost $279 from Toyota. I guess someone was trying to rip me off.

If I relace the sensor(s) myself, will the Check Engine light go off automatically? Is there a way to reset the light?

cjordan,

The light will go off after a short while or a few drive cycles, but the code will remain in the computer's memory. If you have a polution/smog test in Florida, this may cause you to fail the test. It will cause a failure here in Illinois. You can go back to someone with a code reader and they can erase it from memory for you or you can disconnect the battery for a few hours and it should erase the code, however, you will have to reset the radio station presets. Some people say you can remove the ECU fuse for a minute or 2 and this will erase the code without disconnecting the battery and losing the radio presets. I'm not sure about this last one.

I just recently bought a code reader/code eraser at Harbor Freight tools for $40 on sale (normally $50) that lets you read the codes and delete them yourself. I figured this was a good long term investment. If you are interested, it is called a Creader and Harbor Freight's part number for it is 46030. You can go to their website and check it out.

Good luck with the problem.

Mike
