hey guys, my dad was at some dinner yesterday, and while he was driving there, everyhting was fine and dandy. he goes to leave, adn the car won't start! the lights were dim i guess, so he went to jump it and the battery wouldn't charge, so tehy jiggled teh negative terminal and it started, but the whole way home, the lights were flickering. well he comes home, and turns off teh car, and it won't start up again. He cleaned off the negative terminal, because it had a little corrosion on there, and it didn't help. lights inside and all are dim, and sometimes it won't lock/unlock with the remote, and whne it does, u hafta be really close to the car.
please help, i don't wanna be without my car for another day (he has my car while his is dead)
oh yeah, it's an 00 avalon (1MZ vvt-i obviously, with a 4spd ECT-i)
Two possible things, kind of obvious.
1. Tighten the battery terminals.
2.Battery in keyless entry remote is dead and it isn't turning off the alarm/starter kill switch.

I'm assuming you tightened the terminal after cleaning it. How did you check the battery? If you just used a voltmeter to check for 12v, you still won't know how many crank amps are available.
it has the little "hydrolytic eye" and it's green, meaning it's charged
the battery terminals are tightened fully, and it's definitely not the remote, because that wouldn't make teh car not start, and plus, like i said, when he was driving, the headlights kept flickering.
i beleive the battery is dead. the hydrolic eye was green but it had the same symptoms you had. tried charging it by leaving it on.....or car to car....didn't work. battery sucked. back to factory. factory changed. Brand new batttery works like a charm. SHoot......my car wouldn't start after i got off work. =/ so frustrating.

Never trust the eye for charge level. The lights were probably flickering, because the cable was still loose.
hmmmm...i'll try putting my battery in there, and seeing if that works.
EDIT: forgot to mention that he called the local service department, and they said that it sounds like the ground wire is loose. We looked at the ground wire coming off the negative terminal, and it was okay, and then we checked all the wires, all the way through the wiring harness, and everything looked fine, so i'm gonna swap the battery now, otherwise we're gonna tow it to toyota and have them look at it

well well well....looks like it was the battery. he's out right now, so i told him to pick up a battery, thanks guys! now if only i could get that camry running
The old battery might still be good. It may have just been run down, due to the bad connection. It wouldn't hurt to charge it and give it a try, or keep it as a spare. Winter is coming.
