your speaker can be repaired. it can be refoamed (just the surround replaced) or reconed (all the moving parts in the frame replaced) or a DIY refoam kit can be purchased. cathy@speakerex.comwww.speakerex.com
www.SimplySpeakers.com does a great job of repair for the original 86160-AC180 Toyota Avalon subwoofers for around $40. They also repair many other versions of the JBL Toyota speakers found in other models. Call them at 1-800-511-3343 or email: info@simplyspeakers.com They will be happy to help you.
I did my woofer & girlfriend's (both 2000 Avalons) with 8" foam kits from Ebay.
Very simple to get the speaker out (4 bolts) and while you're there put new bulb in high-mount
stop light.
You will find clear instructions on re-foaming by googling on the www.
Go for it - cost - under $15 + new light bulb (lol)

jigg007 said the right stuff just now in this thread. sorry to revive it. but i have to say im utterly impressed and happy that someone knows something about electronics/stereo/speaker instead of the same bs crap myth making that goes on on free sites like this. i would fine tune what he said to include the concept that the factory sub had certain impedance range that the aftermarket would have to match or exceed in value in order to be sure the amp would not be damaged baring further info that specifies the amp could handle any difference. wow. i love this site now.
i think its cool you guys have a refoam kit avail on your cars. i had to do this with a home stereo speaker. its a pain in the butt but useful when a speaker replacement is hard/impossible to find or costs a rediculous amount of money.
"Thanks for holding. We do not have a direct replacement but if you are willing to drill new screw holes, the JBL GTO804 will actually be a good aftermarket model to go with. Here is a link to it:"
That speaker can be had for $60-$70 on Ebay w/free shipping. At that point - I can spend $60 as opposed to $40 plus shipping both ways to FLA from MA.
Any thoughts?
I am not looking for kick my a$$ bass - just a replacement for the OEM speaker. This is my Fiance's car - just want a functional speaker.

Silly Wabbit... Why replace with something else? just re-foam the existing speaker; cheaper, and fast.
It's 30 minutes work to re-foam, or, think of it as making $100+ per hour.
Only trick this guy left out is to slip some thick paper shims between masgnet & coil ((at center of speaker)) to positively center magnet... remove paper before replacing dust cap.
OH... BTW... 8" Foam rings on ebay currently at $7 -$10 delivered for a pair. Glue? $1 $2 ???

Ok sounds good! I haven't even removed the speaker yet, just cut the wires - I might do that tonight if I get a chance. If it is just the foam being bad then I will do the repair for ~~$20. But I also heard that the coils can go on these things as well.

Cut the wires?? How did you manage that? Laid on your back in trunk?
Anyhow, no NEED to cut any wires, there is a PLUG for the wire leads
- you get to the speaker from the top, pop off plastic hi-mount stop-light/speaker cover assembly.
(Slip blade of a puttty knife underneath & lift; change the bulb while you're there)
As to whether voice coil is gone......
If you hear distorted sound it's the foam that's gone; AFAIK, a bad voice coil = NO sound.

Yup haha... No matter, I am quite proficient at soldering so once the speaker is pulled I will fix it up nicely
I had the foam on mine redone but after about 6 months it's cracking again. I don't know what to do at this point but just turn the bass all way down to zero or lower otherwise it sounds like it's blown.

Installed in a 2001 avalon xls, JBL Speaker System
I just installed this in the avalon, and threw the old one out. You also need a
Angle Drill Adapter Right Angle Fitting Attachement. Also need a 10" socket wrench. First I unscrewed the bracket with the socket wrench, then I went in the trunk and moved the sub around, with the bracket. Had to go in the trunk because the screws are facing down, this was the trickiest part. Then when I was able to take the sub out of the car, I screwed the bracket back on to the car, and then I placed the sub where the old sub was. Obviously the factory sub holes arent the same as the kickers. So I got the drill machine with the right angle attachment to it, got some regular screws and screwed them to the bracket. Never installed a sub or speakers before, and i was surprised how smooth it went,
I sent mine in to simplyspeakers.com. for 40 or 50 dollars plus shippinjg, they re=foam and recondition the sub woofer.. take a look at their web site, they show how to package it to ship.

Ha, I realized I never replied to mention which Sub I installed... I wound up installing a JBL GTO 804 sub - it dropped right in from the top without any modifications to the car. It sounds good as the stock sub did. I think I paid $60 shipped on ebay and it was brand new
I can also confirm that if it is just the foam that has done bad or deteriorated, fixing it by refoaming it is quite straightforward.
My 2000 XLS's woofer's foam was gone and it rattled. I bought 8" speaker foam from eaby (2 or 3 bucks, IIRC) and followed the foaming instructions already linked to. The speaker sounds great now! (I did this some months ago).
