Question Avalon Subwoofer

I am new to the forum and new to a used 2000 Avalon XLS.

The factory subwoofer is blown and I was wondering what a good replacement subwoofer would be that would have low power requirements. I don't want to add an amp or box.

Thanks for the help,
Scott

Well first off, this should be posted in the Audio forum. But your new, so all's forgiven

You have two options:

1) Buy a new sub from Toyota which will be an exact match and maybe even be covered by your warrenty. No worries there. Just pricey.

2)Buy an after market one. This depends on what kind of setup you have.

a) If you have a powered sub (normally a small tube, or looks like a normal speaker), then that can be replaced with anything. It mearly wires into the normal speaker wires. For this, I would suggest a Kenwood powered sub. They make a compact one that sounds great, and is only about 2" high. Very reasonable on the wallet too.

b)You have a normal sub (which uses an amp), but it runs off a small factory amp(Looks like any other sub, probably a 8" or 10" sub in a box). Most likely it is this one. In that case, you can either get it buy a new one direct from Toyota, in which they would install it, or go aftermarket.

For aftermarket, you would have to find one that doesn't require much power. The best thing to do would be to check your manual and find out what the current sub is running for power. Then you could find something that would meet those requirements. Depending on the factory amp, that may be hard.

Sorry for posting in the wrong section. Thanks for the reply.

I am fully aware of the different types of subwoofers and powered/non powered enclosures, etc.

I was wondering if anyone in the forum knew of a "drop in" type replacement for the subwoofer. I don't think warranty is an option considering it is a 2000 model.

Thanks again,
Scott

Cool

Try one of the older Kicker free air comp VR's. It wouldn't be loud, but it would definately be an upgrade in power/quality compair to Toyota's OEM crap.

I don't think the factory amp could power that.

Like I said before, check the manual for what your current sub is using for power. Then you can find something based on that.

STicker,

Welcome. There is no drop-in replacement, just the stock part from toyota. There are replacements that require soldering and drilling.

Refoaming is the answer. Plan on spending $40 every 8 years.

BTW, this has been covered here numerous times. All the 2000 models went through it over the past two years.

Searching for woofer rattle should get you a ton of info.

Oh. Unplug that sucker if your waiting for a better time to fix it.

Keith

Clearing things up, the factory amp can power any speaker (within load of impedance, of course) There is no "minimal wattage" on any speaker in existence. It is simply how loud you want it. And Toyota probably uses speakers with good db/1m efficiency ratings. Thus these need less wattage to obtain the same volume.

I'm happy to see that reconing the speaker worked out. Was the $40 the labor charge? or was that the labor and recone kit?

If you read the thread, the answer would be painfully obvious.

Any speaker can be repaired.

I haven't seen many (if any at all) do it yourself on speaker repair, normally its left to the professionals as there has to be spacing and gapping that has to be done right.

A recone kit would prolly run you at 20 dollars anyway.

If you really want to do it yourself, search eBay. I'm sure there are kits with instructions.

I'm not sure on the dimensions, but you could try finding a similar speaker from a site such as mcm electronics, and create a speaker ring to make it fit Toyota's design. But a nice sub/woofer is going to run you at $30 for a starting price.

Subwoofer

Send it to Neil"s Speaker Repair on the west coast, got it back quick, sounds great. I also used a repair service on the east coast.

I called around to local car stereo shops, and found a place that did repairs. I got my factory sub repaired (new foam trim) for $25.
