I've noticed this too. I have a 2000 Avalon XL I bought used about 6 months ago. Dealer checked TSB's at my last oil change (57K miles) nothing showed up. I've only noticed this since it's gotten colder out. Never noticed in Spring (when I bought it) or the summer, just this winter. Seems to stop once the car has warmed up. I read somewhere else that maybe the automatic headlight circuit was at fault. Anyway, you're not alone, there are at least 2 of us.
has anyone found the solution to this problem? I just bought a 00 xls 43k on it didn't notice till it was dark that my "lights were flickering" took it to the dealer they said alternator. wrong!! just had it replaced today and still flick flick flicky flick.help!!!
I just worked on a 00 avalon yesterday. I noticed the same flickering, but didnt find any problems. Needed a battery anyway but that didnt change anything, and the alternator tested good. Customer didnt want us to look into it. I guess they were used to it, or maybe never even noticed it since it was an older couples car. That would drive me nuts if it was my car.
tercel I did do that test awhile back and it still flickered. seeing I just bought the car I had a 60 day warranty (free alternator!!) so I had it done ,but I kinda knew it would'nt fix it. I wish someone would know what was up!! cause yes Shawn it does drive me crazy!!
My 2000 does the same thing. Interior lights & headlights flicker, more noticeably when it's cold out. Had dealer check service bulletins and recalls. Nothing showed up. I had heard it was something in the automatic headlight circuit also. No solution so far as I have heard. I searched high and low on the web and no one has an answer for it. I've had my 2000 for 2 years now and it hasn't gotten any better or worse. If you really want to see it flicker, turn on your overhead map light as soon as you start your car in cold weather. It'll flicker like Xmas lights. If you were epeleptic (sp?) it would probably induce a seizure if you looked at it long enough. I never got out to see if headlights look funky coming at you on the road. It does seem to pretty much go away after everything warms up and I haven't noticed it in the summer.
I wonder if it's only 2000s? Anyone with a later model have the flickering problem? If not, maybe that would help find the cause. Someone could find out what Toyota changed after 2000. just a thought...
it happend on my dad's 00 last yr (maybe a couple years ago). We ended up changing the battery and it was just fine, although that doesn't make any sense.
Well, I Was Reading All Your Posts And To Inform Everyone, I Have A 2003 Xls And I Have Noticed As Well That Sometimes While Your Driving That The Interior Lights Are Flickering. I Only Have 1500 Miles On The Car But I Am Planning To Have The Dealer Check It Out With My Next Inspection. Does Anyone Know Why And What Could It Be?
I have a 2000 Avalon XLS. I notice a very very fast flicker of all the lights interior/exterior when the car is running.
Is this definately the Internal Regulator in the Alternator?
The alternator is not cheap either!
Thanks,

I have a 2000 avalon xls also. The same thing has been happening to my lights. I contacted my local Toyota dealer and he said it was the alternator. It wasn't! He then got in touch with the head toyota people in California. They said for him to disconnect the air/fuel sensors and check the lights. no more flickering.A computer glitch. they say the air/ fuel sensors are coming on at the same time creating a large draw on the electrical system. As soon as they can get some software together they will reprogram the computer so the two fuel/air sensors come on at different times instead of together so there is not the large draw on the system. Check with your Toyota dealer on this. Also replaced my battery. All that draw was weakening the battery. Even though the flicker is still there it's not as noticeable with the new battery.
