I had the first Y2K Avalon on the block. It's been perfect with 93,000 miles so far. I've changed the oil and filter every 7,500 miles, and I changed the brake pads at about 90,000 miles, but have not yet changed the timing belt or spark plugs. These are on my to-do list.
I'm a moderator on
www.TheDieselStop.com, and I can tell you exactly how to calibrate the speedometer for Ford diesel pickups. But my Toy service manager tells me there is no such thing on my Avalon. The stock 205/60R16 tires resulted in an unacceptable odometer/speedometer error. So assuming my service manager knew his job, I did the math and determined that 205/55R16 tires would correct the odometer/speedometer.
So I have 205/55R16 tires. And sure enough, my odometer is less than one percent off now. But the tires are a bit too small for my car, and I'd like to go back to stock size tires. But I also insist on an accurate odometer.
The Ford diesel pickup speedo is calibrated by changing the tire revolutions per mile in the ABS module of the "computer" network that controls the engine, tranny and ABS. I can't believe the Toy doesn't do it basically the same way. All it should take is a good scanner/tester and someone who knows how to get into the tire revs/mile parameter in the computer.
Can someone tell me how to do it in enough detail that I could print it out and give it to my service manager? (No, I don't do my own work anymore.)
