Noisy transmission

Hi guys...new here.
Bought a 2003 Avalon Grande with 28,000k on the clock about a month ago.
Beautiful car. Traded my old faithful 280,000k Camry Vienta that never gave me a second's trouble. Was tempted to keep it just to see how long it would last.
Anyway, the Avalon has a wobbly sort of noise from the front apparent mainly at 50-60kph and only while coasting ( "on the over-run" my mechanic says). It's not loud but it's there. Can't hear it at lower or higher speeds.
Have had wheel balance & alignment ( OK ), tyres & bearings checked ( OK ).
My mechanic who is excellent took it for a drive & says it's a problem with third gear.
Imagine it will only get worse with time.
I intend getting another opinion ( NRMA ) before I go back to the dealer.
My query here is, has anyone else had a similar problem? I want to make sure it's not a "known" problem.
Transmission fluid level normal.
Grateful for any suggestions.
Thanks
Tezza.
