best size tire for 17x7 limited wheel 2005-6 avalon

I just bought a set of limited wheels on ebay. What size tire is the best fit? I currently have 16" wheels with 215/60 tires. I'd like to fill the wheel well a bit but do not want any rubbing. I would also like a bit wider but again no rubbing.

I was considering maybe an inch wider and an inch taller maybe a 235/55/17 tire. There are a lot of style of tire to choose from in that size as well.

Any feedback?

stock tires are 215/55, and if these guys can put 245's on 20's, i cant imagine how there would be any problems with 235/55/17.

Your best bet would be 235/50/17. That's pretty much the widest you can go with a 7" width. The overall diameter is also the closest to the factory 215/55/17 so you shouldn't have any rubbing or speedo/odo issues. Hope this helps.

20's have a different offset. The stock rims are tucked in pretty good. You can't go too wide or you'll hit the rear strut.

20 mm is less than an inch wider and less than 1/2 inch more width toward the strut...

You could also put on 5mm spacers and that would probably solve any rubbing issues as well as bring the wheel out more for a better look...however, there is someone on this forum that runs 20 x 8.5 wheels with 245/35/20 tires while maintaining the factory 45mm offset, so if he doesn't rub the inside there should be any problems at all. Thats 3/4" more wheel on the inside plus 15mm of tire. In addition to that, I believe that 245/35/20 has a slightly larger overall diameter than 215/55/17. Going to a 235 adds only 10mm and maintains the overall diameter. Sorry if I'm sounding redundant.

found out the 235/55/17 is the stock tire for the 05-06 mustang gt. so I'm going hunting for takeoffs again.

215/55/17 is going to be real tight. your looking at an overall increase in diameter of 0.87", nearly an inch taller. Without changing the offset, I think you may hit the rear strut with that size. Your best bet is still 235/50/17 because it's almost identical to the factory diameter. For what it's worth, though I do think that the wheels are tucked in too much, I do feel that the factory wheels/tires do a nice job in filling the wheel well. Most cars do not sit as nicely as the Avalon, IMO.

Yes, .87" taller in total, but only .435" side wall which is nothing.

Hi everyone,

On my 06 Limited I have Dunlop SP5000's in 245/50 17. No rubbing or clearance problems so far.

Definitely makes the car's stance from the rear and side alot more aggressive.

Richard.

I also replaced my XL 16" wheels with aftermarket 17s and I used 225/55/17. No issues at all. I bit taller than stock to fill the wells up a little more. There are numerous choices in this size.

I'm doing the same wheels on my Camry with 225/45/17s they are shorter then the tires that come on the Avalon rims stock, but they are closer to what comes on the Camry stock.

I went with 235/50/17 but have yet to get the tires mounted on my wheels.
There were several reason I went with nvh's recommendation.
1. basically stock tire height. I hate the tranny and with a bigger tire it may make the problem worse.
2. speedometer. I do not have a chip or programmer to adjust the speedo and my wife is becomming a speed demon and could forget that she is driving faster than the speedo reading.
3. still under warranty and dealer would probably have less problem with a stock height tire.
4. got a good deal on some 235/50/17 's. They were continentals for $70 each at tire rack.

I'm sure there are other things I forgot but that gives you some ideas why I went with the smaller size. The limited 17's with 9.25" wide tires should look better than the stock xl 16" 8.5" wide tires.
