'06 Avalon - How To Change Oil/Filter - Doc Enclosed

Those of you who have recently purchased a new Avalon and plan on using the dealers "free oil/filter change coupons" that may have come with your purchase.

Beware!!!

The coupons read "up to 5 qts." - unfortunately your car holds 6.4 qts. of oil; not 5 qts.

I've searched the WEB and have learned that many Toyota dealers are only installing 5 qts. in the '06 Avalon motor.

All the more reason to change your own oil. Here's the URL with the instructions:

Regards,

Mike Murrell

Jag_man:

I have always used Castrol GTX oil. In the '06 Avalon, I'll use the 5W-30 wt. as specified by Toyota.

I salute Toyota for not hyping synthetic motor oil. I say this because I've taken several cars beyond 300,000 mi. using conventional motor oil.

You can use any name brand oil you like. Pick a color. Just be sure the specs. on the bottle line up with the requirements in your owners manual.

Regards.

If a shop tells you to bring what you want and you show up with Mobil-1, the Mobil-1 went into "someone" elses engine later that night and you got the Quaker State sitting on their shelf.

I hear what you're saying and to a large extent, you are correct.

The other reason they're there is for HR(human resource) reasons. People get injured on the job and the owner/his lawyers/insurance company want to know what happened.

Adaptor for draining 350's oil filter

Anyone know where to purchase the adaptor mentioned in this pdf file? It is the one that
snaps into the bottom of oil filter to drain the oil from filter housing.
Thanks,
Tubby2

A new adaptor comes in the box with each new oil filter element.

Thanks for the quick come-back.
The Avalon 350, I understand, has the same 2GRFE engine as my Lexus RX-350, so I planned to use their pdf instructions for my first time oil/filter change.
The first filter Lexus sold me was the metal canister type. %#&8! Now I see the the 04152-YZZA3 filter they exchanged does not have the adaptor you mentioned, and it only has only the single large 'O' ring.
Makes me want to shop at my much closer Toyota dealer. . .
Thanks again,
Tubby2

The Toyota part number for the Avalon filters I have been buying is 01452-YZZA1. I wonder what is different about 01452-YZZA3? Perhaps it says Lexus on the box instead of Toyota. Perhaps they changed something for the Lexus models. Are there instructions printed on the outside of the box?

In any case, if you decide you need one of the adaptors, I have plenty and can send you one. I reuse the same one every time. I would not be particularly concerned if I had to re-use the small O-ring. Its function seems a lot less critical than the big O-ring.

Hey, that is mighty nice of you to offer the adaptor, but looking at the instructions
printed on the box, I think the dealer may have sold me yet another incorrect filter.
The Toyota number on box is 04152-YZZA3, and the photos don't resemble my filter housing. I'll go in tomorrow and ask for the parts manager.
My understanding is the 2GR-FE engine is in the 2006 Avalon, 2006 RAV4 V6, 2007 Camry V6, 2007 Lexus ES 350, and my 2007 Lexus RX 350.
My thanks to you and Mike Murrell for your assistance.
Tubby2

(by chance, did you invert the . . .041. . . in your part number to . . .014. . ., or is that just a coincidence? )

Forget the adaptor or 2 in. long plastic tube used to drain the housing. I'm making this statement based on personal experience and that of others who told me the same thing.

I do not have the '06 Avalon filter number in front of me - don't remember, but it comes in a box with:

a. filter
b. 2 o-rings - 1 large - 1 small
c. adaptor or 2 in. plastic tube

Here's the technique I've used and it does not require you to use this tube(adaptor).

1. loosen the plug on the bottom of the housing that the adaptor would fit into. The plug is loosened with a 3/8 dr. extension. The hole is square.
2. now use a 65mm-67mm 14 flute oil filter wrench to loosen the housing. The base of the housing is designed for the oil filter wrench to fit snugly on. loosen and remove housing and have a pan underneath. the housing holds approx. 10-12oz of oil.
3. with housing removed, drain oil from it, remove filter and large o-ring that's on the outer part of the housing. the small o-ring is inside the plug you loosened earlier that's at the base of the housing. replace this small o-ring and refit plug. be sure to oil both o-rings. once everything has been cleaned up and all o-rings and filter have been replaced, reinstall housing. you will notice that it will tighten just so much, so over-torquing shouldn't be an issue. same holds true for snugging the small plug at the base of the housing.
4. refill oil from top as usual. '06 Avalon owners manual indicates 6.4 qts. I found this brings it to the full mark after the oil has had a chance to circulate and settle after sitting on a level surface overnight.

It's just a matter of time before Wix has their version of this filter.
