Canada rust proofing/rust spraying

I am new on the forum having just purchased a '05 XLS that has never been rust protected. Since I live in salty, damp Toronto would I be okay with only oil spraying or would I be wise to have a more extensive protection where I believe they spray inbetween door panels by making some sort of holes that they plug.

WHere in TO are you?

You can ask the rust proofing service shop to use pre existing trim plugs, clip holes so that they do not need to drill.

You can find these behind most door trim, and weather stripping.

IMO unless your planning on keeping this car over 20 years, save your money.

Any rust proofing shop will spray rust proof oil inside doors and other panels. The other rust proofing is called undercoating, or a thicker spray onto the underside of the car and wheel wells.

Krown is a reputable chain, as is the rust check, and ziebart franchises.

My brother was in the Coast Guard when he was sent to "corrosion school." The instructors said that under no circumstances should a vehicle be rust-proofed, particularly undercoated. Odds are good that moisture will be trapped, accelerating any corrosion problems. I have no other knowledge of the issue, just passing this along for what it's worth.

Aren't the Avalons made of galvanized steel anyway? I don't understand the need for undercoating. But then again - I don't live in an area where roadsalt is used!

I've heard the same thing as Mickeyp. I live in mid Michigan, home of the salt truck. I have two vehicles rust proofed at Zeibart when they were about 2 years old. One of the vehicles I sold to my father, so I was able to track it. He drove it until it died 2 years ago, a 1985 Pontiac 6000LE. The Body had almost no rust. It would have looked better if he had ever washed it.

I believe newer cars are much better galvanizing. They have to with the sheet metal being thinner. Rust through would occur faster. If you bother to care for the vehcile, rust shouldn't be a problem unless your ownership is beyong 10-12 years.
