I changed the air filter in my 07 Avalon and can see some of the white of the filter on the left side. The cover seems to be locked down and the filter is seated. Is it normal to still see some of the element on the seem? Thanks, Joe
PS; I have changed many engine air filters and have not seen one show through after closing the top. It just seems strange and I can really use some help from anyone else who has changed theirs. Thanks, Joe

If your car is a V-6 and you are talking about the southwest corner of the box - yes - I too noticed a section of the filter thru a small rectangular shaped hole of the air filter box cover.
Mike, Thanks for the insight. When I feel around the back of the cover (cant see there) I can feel the air filter. Seems like Toyota should look into why a filter cover does not totally cover the filter and keep water etc from having a way into the system. Thanks again.
PS. Can you also feel the filter in the back of your cover?
Another air filter question- When I un did the 3 clips it seemed like the other side of the filter housing was on some kind of hinge. Do you just press down on the hinge? Seems like this provides little room to install the new filter. Did I do this correctly or is there another way to do it? Thanks, Joe
How many miles does your 07 have and you change filters?

18,000 after 1 year. It looked dirty with leaves and grime in it so I don't think it was too soon. I did the cabin air fileter also and it was really bad.
Are you able to feel the filter on the opposite side of the cover box? I hope that this is just another Toyota quirk. Thanks, Joe
I remove the black plastic cover that sits atop the air filter.
- loosen all clips
- remove elect. connection on top
- loosen large 2-wire hose clamp
Once all of the above is done you lift up on the cover and twist it away from the big hose-like connection. You are right - there is a hinge down below. You have to fanagle with it, but it's not hard to get on or off.
Doing this allows you the opportunity to clean dirt & leaves in the bottom of the air filter housing.
Mike,Thanks. I did not have the confidence to remove anything electrical. Next time I will give it a try. Has to be better than trying to do it the way I did it. It still bothers me that I can see the filter show through in the corner, and can feel it in the back. I guess it is just a poor design. Thanks again, Joe

Joe I detailed my engine well and removed the upper air filter housing during the process. No white filter element was showing on my 2006 V6. If it is seated properly no white should show. And yes to remove the housing you need to push the upper housing toward the engine intake about 1/2"allowing (loosing the phillips screw holding the rubber hose first) a slotted member to unlatch. Once you get it off you can see what I am attempting to describe and it is a hinge of sorts. Be careful of the 1/4" hoses attached to the filter housing and don't beak the nipples off. Apparently a service technician did that at my dealership and then attempted to super glue it back. Bad idea since it came off. The upper housing is $141 where I live but I repaired it. Hope this helps.
The 06 Avalon Limited has 70K and has had a new air filter installed every 5k. Cheap insurance and consistently good fuel economy. The mod above was also done to the 06 Sienna Limited.

Joe - I just changed my 2007 Avalon air filter and I also see the same white edge (small area along the front). I also see the white filter element edge along the back (with a mirror). Is this normal?
To ensure the air filter is right side up when installed, look at the corners of the filter. Notice that one corner is much more square than the other rounded corners. The filter housing has a corresponding "square" corner. You may need a flashlight to see it. Put the filter in so the square corners of the filter and housing are together.

Robert-the filter element has one additional rib running the full length right along the bottom - similar to the original filter. My main concern is whether I have the back two 'pivot' hinges properly set. The 'white' edge of the filter is clearly visible as viewed with a mirror along the back side (parallel to the fire wall). I would love to hear from a 2007 Avalon owner - if they could check their filter element along the back side.
