2008 transmission.....

Has anyone moved up to a 2008 with the 6 speed tranny from an '05 or newer with the 5 speed. From specs I'm finding on the internet it looks like the engine would be spinning much slower at highway speeds with the 6 speed. As a matter of fact it looks like it would be spinning slower even in 5th gear (with the 6 speed).
Wondering if indeed the engine is spinning lower rpm.....what the tranny feels like....and if there is an improvement in fuel economy.

I think that the more inportant question is does the 08 6sd still slip and jump gears!

I guess I've been missing something here as far as "slipping and missing gears" goes. I know about the tranny reflash to keep the engine rpm up a bit and make the shifting smoother. Mine qualifies for the reflash but I'm afraid to do it. Apparently I have a "miracle"car in that my avy is getting an ez 32 mpg on the freeway at 72mph and 35 mpg going to the cabin 90 miles away with the cruise at 62 on rural roads.
I've even seen people go so far as to say that they thought their car was "dangerous" before the reflash. Anyhow....I look at my avy as the most comfortable economy car money can buy. It isn't a sports car and never will be...even with a tranny reflash. With gas headed for $4.00 gal I'm driven to "drive for mileage".

Kraky - I envy your mpg. My wife's '06 Avalon got between 26.5 - 29.5 before the reflash. There were a few tanks after the reflash that had better mpg, but now that she's driven several 1000 miles on the reflash, I see the mpg is really no better.

On avg, she gets about 28....maybe.

If the drive is good for you, I'd forget the reflash & keep my 32-35 mpg. I suppose yu could lose that after having the reflash.

Well I don't know why but some guys are doing well and some are doing like you. I have checked my computer against the gas pump and it is dead on the nuts on highway mileage. If, however, I mix in some city driving the computer is about 5-7% optimistic.
When I tell my friends what the car is doing I get a look like "your full of balogna". I wish my same driving habits would work for my honda pilot awd. My 2004 pilot would get 23 pretty easy....my 2007 can barely make 20mpg. One thing about driving here in Rural Wisconsin....you don't have alot of traffic like some really populated states. You don't get run over if you are doing 72 on the freeway....you don't have to tromp on the gas to merge...etc etc....you can pretty much put on the cruise......and cruise.

As soon as I purchased my 08 Limited back in September, I’ve been getting about 13 MPG for city driving in New York City (manual arithmetic method). The computer shows an average of 15 MPG, confirming what kraky said. However, for highway driving I get up to 32 MPG (manual and computer methods both agree).

Since most of my driving is within the city, it’s obvious that traffic lights and congestion is doing a number on my city MPG. However, somewhere in this forum I read the experience of a guy who moved from North Carolina to New Jersey and noticed that his ’05 Limited dropped from 400 plus miles per full tank (in NC) to 300 (his current location in NJ).

How could this guy be getting 400 miles per tank on an ’05??? Or perhaps there is something related to geographical area? The gas perhaps? But then again, how come I get 32 MPG for highway driving?

Be glad for what you get...sounds great. Can you tell me what rpm your engine is running at 65 mph in top gear?? (I'd like to compare to my 06 with the 5 speed). Thanks

Though I glance to the tach while driving, I'll need to pay a bit more attention so that I can answer your question correctly.

I may take me a while though. I don't take the interstate often, but I keep your request in mind. I can tell you this, idle speed is 600 rpm (compared to my 05's Camry which was 800 rpm)

Thanks...I'll have to take a look at our '05 and post what it's doing. (I think it's just over 2000). I know it spins pretty fast considering the good mileage. One other thing about our Avy...especially compared to the Pilot is when you let off the gas it takes a quite a while for it to coast down in speed. I got picked up last year about 1/4 mile into a small town cause I'd let off the cruise at the city limits and was still going about 45 in a 25mph zone. Luckily I got a nice cop who just gave me a ticket for not having my seat belt on. ON the pilot when you let off the gas it's almost like you have the brake on slightly...it really hauls down the speed quickly. I guess it's the awd system and the big blocky front end and high roof line. I think that the Pilot will be replaced with a highlander some day. Seems like those guys are getting a pretty easy 23-24 mpg even on the awds.

Finally got out of town with our '06 Avy.....checking the tach when it's right on 2000 rpm it's doing 67-68mph. We did a 50 mile trip to another town this weekend.....did a bit of driving in town....and came home. Overall mpg was 34.1 on the dash when we got home. I WILL NOT be taking this car in for any transmission "updates" unless they are mechanically related.

My wife drives an 08 Avalon with the six speed tranny. I ask her to check engine rpm's with mph on the highway and here's what she gave me.

60 mph = 1750 rpm
65 mph = 1900 rpm
70 mph = 2100 rpm
75 mph = 2200 rpm

She noted that these are approximations as close as she could tell.

How does this compare to the five speed ?

The gas mileage has been 32 on long trips and about 22 on short commutes.

since you seem to "bracket" my results on my '06 perfectly I'd say the tranny's run at the same speed in top gear!!
