Air Intake Snorkel Screen

I was cleaning the air filter in my car today and noticed I had quite the bug, twig and leaf collection embedded in the air filter element. No, I do not live in the jungle. I decided to do something to prevent this from happening again and possibly prolong the efficiency and life of my air filter element.

I had some black nylon screen material and a couple of 10'' - 12" zip ties lying around so I drilled two holes into the side of the scoop about 1/2 inch in from the front edge on either side of the scoop opening and slipped the zip ties through the holes making a band around the entire scoop. Then I cut and fitted the screen material, tucked it under the zip ties and stretched it so that it fit snuggly across the opening, and then I cinched down the zip ties to hold the screen material in place. I reinstalled the snorkel and plastic shroud that covers the front of the radiator and headlight housings and below is how it looks. I am sure someone could do a fancier job but this is close enough for government work and I don't think it looks bad at all.

Thank you.
I did this on my 4Runner, but I also opened up the air box with a mod a lot of us were doing using a marine deck plate.

I was surprised at how many large bugs were wedged into the gusset wells of the filter element.
