Replace cassette

Hi everyone,
Just bought an 07 Touring and I love it. I was getting tired of the expense of fueling my Tundra and then my buddy fell asleep and totaled it! Insurance paid $2K more than I paid for the Tundra. So now I drive the Avalon. I have always wanted leather and lumbar support. I didn't realize how fast it ran until I got home and let my 22 year old drive! Runs like a scalded dog!

The Avalon has a cassette player. Is there anything I can replace it with? An Ipod, Navigation, Satelite radio, or even a cool compartment? Can anyone reccommend some aftermarket sites?

Thanks, Robert

Is the cassette a separate unit?

You can get the single DIN pocket from any car audio or even at the electronics stores like CC

Assuming the 2007 is similar to the 2005 model, there is not a lot of space available where the cassette player is located. You can get some idea from this file (as well as how to access the player): http://members.cox.net/n0v8or/console_removal.pdf
This Avalon has the Navigation controller in the cassete location.

Tape Deck Mute?

Anyone know what the mute is for? I just bought the cubbie hole to replace the tape and was going to tap into the tabe deck wires for an MP3 hook up. I discovered today that a tape has to be in the tape deck for the head unit allow the selection of the tape deck.

So, what I am hoping is that the Mute line is something that can be grounded or tied to 12V to make it think the tape deck is installed.

Console Box Upper

I ordered what is called the console box upper. It shows as one of the dash options on the exploded view. So I ordered at the parts counter from Toyota. It set me back $40 with tax and got it the next day. If I replace the HU if taping into the tape deck wires doesn't work then I will still want to use it. Other wise I am thinking of returning it and just cutting the wires to the Tape play back unit, disconnecting the wires for the audio from the tape deck and connecting my MP3 player wires to them so I do not get the his. That way I can fake out the player hopefully.

I was reading one of the other threads about all the complexities of adding a Sub to the JBL Synthesis system that has me thinking I just may replace the Head Unit with something that has a sub out and an IPOD/MP3 connection built in. I am just trying to get by on the cheap since I do not think the factory standard 9 speaker unit sounds to0 bad. But I do think it needs a sub and I listen exclusively to my MP3 player so it is kind of a big deal to me.

Update to Upper Console Box

I am updating this for anyone that finds this thread. I ended up returning the console box. It turned out you have to replace another dash piece to be able to mount it. It wasn't too badly priced, $74, but now I would be upto $105 for a console box. You also lose the dore that hides the box or tape player. I wanted to store my MP3 player and other stuff with the door my tape player has.

So, Crutchfield has a universal DIN Pocket for about $15 that I am going to purchase. The tape player looks to be about the size of a 1 DIN HU. I am debating whether to cut a hole in the face plat of the tape player mount or just mount the pocket flush to the back surface in case I ever want to put the tape player and stock HU back in.

Hope someone finds this helpful.

I'm having trouble processing this. I too am embarrassed when I show the people what's under the secret door. All I want is a shallow cubby and NOT modify how the door trims out the console.

Would be very interested if someone had something, but am not thinking it should cost over 50.

Maybe I'll break down and pull out my old collection of Bob Segar and the Silver Bullet Band on cassette - vintage 1982... which as about the time CD audio started breaking out.
