Factory Toyota XM Antenna For Avalon

Hello all,

I am new here and this is my first post. This is for anyone who has XM in their Avalon with the antenna mounted on the side of the trunck or on the inside rear deck. I just installed a "hard mount" XM antenna on my '08 Avalon. Works great with no loss of signal. I will be ahppy to post pictures of the antenna installed and if anyone wants, the part numbers. These are Toyota factory OEM parts.
Mike

Wink XM Antenna Install

The part numbers are as follows: #86960-02010-C0 Corolla XM Antenna Assembly ($75.00, Pd $49.46) Avalon antenna (with antenna wire)from XM fit kit. #PT546-07061-AK ($90.00, Pd $60.90). The second XM antenna is so there is no cutting and splicing wires.
In reponse to toothacher, these parts are Toyota parts. If your local dealer will access the 2009 Corolla rear view diamgram, then this will show an exploded view of the rear roof of the car. This view shows the roof mounted XM antenna. If they will input the above part numbers, then the antennas will show up in their DCS system. Let me know if they do not want to fool with it and I will put you in touch with a parts department that will order them. Please understand, the prices I paid might be less than what someone else gets.
Here are the steps of installation: *Caution* There is drilling involved
1) The obvious, buy the parts.
2) Remove the (painted) cover from the Corolla XM antenna by removing the screws from the underside base. Send the cover out to be painted your Avalons color. Set the base plate and "pigtail' aside. We will come back.
3) Take the XM Fit kit antenna, turn over and scrape the gooey adhesive off of the bottom to expose the magnet and screws. Unscrew the bottom and seperate from the black cover. This exposes the actual antenna chip. You will see a square plastic bracet that holds the antenna chip in place by screws. Unscrew this bracket and remove the antenna chip with the cable and grey Fakra connector. The cable is soldered on the chip. Set aside.
4) The Corolla XM Antenna has the same setup. Remove the black rubber base, unscrew the square plastic bracket. The "pigtail" has a blue Fakra connector on the end. This has to be removed, take a very small slotted screw driver (one for eyeglasses or jeweler will work), open the connetor from the top and slide the the antenna wire out and remove from the base completely. Set aside the pigtail and blue connector, these will not be used any longer.
5) Take the XM antenna chip with the long cable and grey Fakra connector that was removed from the antenna fit kit and prepare for mounting onto the Corolla XM Antenna base. Remove the grey Fakra connector GINGERLY the same way the blue one was removed. Slide the antenna cable through the threaded 1/2 long base mount. There is a lot of cable here so make sure and keep it from getting tangled. After the cable is pulled through, place the antenna chip in the mount and seat it properly. Place the square plastic bracket back on, screw to tighten. Do not over tighten, you might break something! Re-attatch the grey Fakra connector to the cable.
You should have a metal mounting base with a long thin cable going though the center of a threaded mount at this time.
6) You have received your painted to match XM antenna cover. Attach the cover to the base plate with the rubber seal. This should complete the tedious part.
Measureing and Drilling
7) Dependent on your level of expertise or comfort will depend on where you mount the antenna.
I deliberated for several days on either the roof or trunk. With the roof you must drop the headliner and by doing that several inside rear panels have to be removed. We dropped the headliner enough to do some measuring, mounting on the roof would work but this would be a big task. If something does not go right, unfortunatly you are 100% commeted! I decided to drill and mount on the trunk. It looks great and very clean. I had a Master Tech install mine while I watch him drill.
8) Preping the trunk: remove the inside trunk lid garnish (molded carpet). This exposes the metal bracing of the trunk lid.
9) Use the rear glass antenna that is dead center of the glass to get you center point on the outside of the trunk. Use blue painters tape to mark and drill through.
10) Tree holes will have to be drilled, two in the top of the trunk and one from the underside. There is a brace that runs the width (Horizontal) of the trunk lid. We did not drill there. The reason is it might jeapordise the integrity and regidity of the trunk lid. The brace that runs vertical is the one we drilled.
I will upload pictures of the antenna mounted and where the inside hole is.
11) The cable was run from the left side of the trunk to the right side to the XM antenna receiver. Mine is mounted on the right side of the trunk to the right of the trunk hinge.

I hope this lengthy process helps, if any further info is need please feel free to ask.

thetempler, appreciate antennae information. Will look forward for your edit on installation. Please list dealer where you purchased antennae. Local dealer said exterior antennae was not available.

This looks great.. has anyone tried connecting an XM Inno to the external antenna? I'm new to the Avalon and am trying to figure out if its worth determining where the antenna cable goes.
