If your dad's car came with factory-installed GPS, then you can attach ad view images from, say, a rear-view video camera.

If the car came with no GPS then the screen in the car is of a fix character; meaning that pre-defined icons display (light-up) on the screen according to specific car functions being activated. Even if the screen can display arrays of moving images (factory-installed GPS) I doubt you can watch DVD and enjoy the experience at the same time. Why? For a descent DVD movie display the screen need a minimum of 600 to 700 lines of resolution (about 1280 x 1024 pixel resolution). This is in part due to the nature of bit-map images.

Whichever the case is, the screen in your dad's car (or in any other Avalon) may not have that resolution because is not needed for GPS display, which is based on vector images. You could try, but I'd bet it would be a waste of time doing it.

The NAV-GPS screen is an array of individually-addressable multicolor pixels, similar to a color laptop computer screen. I don't know the resolution, but with the appropriate video switch/adapter (such as sold by GNET), mine displays DVD movies from a portable DVD player just fine. The movie soundtrack, however, cannot be heard through the audio system. Viewers have to use earphones connected to the DVD player.

The non-factory-GPS screen is similar to that found on an ordinary calculator, and not full color. As Amaury said, it can only display pre-determined characters and symbols in specific locations.

The factory NAV-GPS screen has familiar R-G-B and Sync analog video inputs. The non-GPS screen has digital only inputs to select the characters/icons to be displayed. I do not think it is possible to make a video converter to overcome the limitations of the latter.

Update Nav map

Hello - does anybody know how I can update the map(s) in my 2006 Avalon? It has the Nav with the tiny lady stuck inside that doesn't understand a WORD!

Thanks.

whitejag,

I have the original '07 DVD. Contact me if you want to discuss further.

If you have the newer disc already and want to know how to proceed with the change do this:
a) Locate the Nav DVD player, which is in the trunk by the tail lights, driver's side. Remove or set aside portion of the trunk's trim cover hiding the DVD player.
b) Make sure the ignition is in "acc" or "on". Better for the car if it's in "acc"
c) Identify "eject" button on the player. Remove old disc, then insert new disc.

The Nav system will finish the installation process by itself within a few secs. According to the manual, once this procedure is complete, your Nav system won't read the old disc any longer.
