Into + 2007 Cruise Control Problem

My first post on this great forum. I just bought a loaded 2007 Avalon LTD (1,864 miles @ $25,000!) and am impressed with the car to no end. Everything seems to work flawlessly, even though the NAV system takes some getting used to. But the cruise control seems to have a problem.

When I turn the cruise control on as I would with any other car, the green "Cruise" light on the dash flashes on as does a red light. When the accelerator is released, the car simply slows down: no cruise control. Except once when the cruise control kicked in after the car slowed about 10 mph.

I'm wondering if some of the other electronic gadgetry is at play (Dynamic Laser, VSC and TRAC) or if it's just a glitch that warrants a trip to the dealership. To me, the car is perfect in so many ways I'm thinking I must be doing something wrong!

You probaably know this already, but here is how to engage cruise:
Press button in on stalk - observe green light.
Tap stalk down to set speed.
Tap up or down to adjust set speed.
Pull stalk toward you to cancel.

Yep, that's what I've been doing.

If your car comes with laser cruise, and that's what you have engaged when it 'fails' - you should know that it doesn't work well in rainy conditions nor when there's sunlight directly hitting the laser receiver (early morning, late evening). One other thing you can try is to clean the lens for the laser. It's located next to the fog lamp on the passenger side.

Good luck!

The laser cruise also has a standard cruise function.
Turn cruise on. (It automatically goes to laser cruise.)
Before doing anything else push stalk towards dash. This puts you into standard, non laser, cruise mode.
Set speed.

If this doesn't work then I'd say you have a problem with the whole cruise control module. If it does work then you probably have an issue with the laser portion. They can get damaged by road debris hitting the laser emmiter on the front of the car.
