If you have a Generation III Avalon, take a closer look at the headlight switch by the steering wheel; you may have a DRL-OFF setting. It could be that simple.

If your Avalon is model year 2005/2006 the function of the OFF/DRL-OFF position of the headlight switch is software-controlled. Your dealer can access the body computer with his CBES (Customized Body Electronics System) tool and change the function from DRL to "No DRL". This is probably true for 2007/2008 models as well. Canadian Dealers may be reluctant to perform this change due to Provincial/National laws. You might be forced to drive across the border to have it done.

In this case, I do not believe there is a simple hardware modification that will disable DRL. The "high-beam" headlights are switched by a solid-state relay. For "normal" headlamp operation, the relay is turned on by the body computer. For DRL, the relay is pulsed on and off (at ~100 times per second) to operate the bulbs at reduced intensity. If you remove the relay, the high-beam lights will never turn on. If you short the relay, they will always be on at full intensity.

Why would you want to disable them anyway, eh? They are a proven safety feature. Many studies in the states and in the frozen North have proven this.

I'm working on adding these to my 2008 Tacoma that didn't come with this feature.

One previous poster did a lot of driving on dark rural roads and wanted to replace his halogen high beam lamps with afftermarket HID for safety reasons (earlier visibility of 150-pound deer ready to jump into his path). He planned to leave his halogen low-beam lamps on as DRL (the approach used by Volvo and some other manufacturers).

The term "disable" does not always convey the full intent.
