Daytime running light

I took my 07 Avalon XL to the dealer due to a low battery charge. They told me the draw was because I had left the park lights on and everything else looked OK . I looked at the manual when I got home and it appears that the park lights (Position 1) will automatically turn off when the driver's door is open with the engine off. Am I reading that correctly?

Yes, that's what the manual says. Did you do a visual check to make sure that they do or do not turn off in that situation? (Apparently they should)

If it is not working properly, take it to the dealer and ask them to fix it.

Question though- wouldn't it be easier just to leave the lights on the 'AUTO' setting all the time? (Or turn it to off?)

After I got it home I found that the park lights and headlights will turn off after I open the door if they were on while the engine was running. But, when I turn them on after I turn the engine off they will not turn off automatically when I open the door.
Yes, you are right about leaving them in auto all the time, but in Virginia you are required by law to turn the lights on in rain so they get changed.
