Anyone put a wheelchair lift on the back of theirs?

Hi Folks!

Has anyone had to put a lift on the back of their Avalon? My dad's got a 2007, and the doctor wants him to get one of those scooters (he's 88 years old--not driving anymore--and has had a major hip operation, so mobility is down). Problem is, my dad was told that they are too heavy (300 lbs, i don't know if that's with or without the lift) for the back of his Avalon. I was wondering if there's any sort of beefed up suspension springs or something else that he can use to make it work for him? He loves his Avalon, but he also needs to get around once he gets out of it. I know he would hate to have to sell his car, though.

I assume you mean a scooter as opposed to a power wheel chair. In any event, we have had many lifts to lift the scooter to the trunk with no problem. I usually have the car running so as not to strain the battery. The scooter is no different than 2 full size adults in the back seat.

Good Luck

thanks for the advice. I don't know yet if they'll be getting a power wheelchair (those are the ones with the four little wheels, right?) or a scooter. It will all be determined when he comes out of surgery, and we know if he can use a walker around the house. If he can't, then he'll likely need a power wheelchair to fit through the hallway.

Is there a difference between the lifts that will be needed?

Scooter or wheelchair

I have been dealing with these for over 10 years.
A scooter easily fits into a large sedan. It weighs under 100 pounds so I had a lift in the trunk and hoisted it in from the ground.
We now have a power wheelchair and it weighs 300 pounds and it too heavy and large to fit in a sedan. You would need a van with a ramp

Try to stay with the scooter as it is much easier

If you want to discuss, email me at capac@optonline.net

ciao
