Smart key programing

Hi guys!
I just got a used 2005 Avalon Limited. Unfortunately it came with only one smart key. I want to buy another one on e-bay and program it myself. Does anyone have a step-by-step programing procedure for that?
Thanks in advance.

Just went this myself, dealer is the only one with the equipment to program a new one. Bought one off ebay and would not program (dealer tried for 4 hours, stayed and made sure) had to send back and get another. One a side note the key that is for when you battery dies has to come from dealer another $40 unless you get a blank and can find a place that can cut lazer cut keys. Dealer requires you to pay for the key not a stock item, sent the info god knows where and in about a week the key is sent to dealer. Good luck.

enjun, thanks for your reply. Did you actually see how they programmed your key? What kind of equipment do they have for it? Just curious.

yes, first they plugged scanner (where you can set how doors lock, how long lights stay on, etc) into OB plug under dash, take the new key and hold it next to the start button, it will beep and then you take the remote and lay it on the seat or somewhere within the car and the scanner will then identify it there also. It is now coded for your car and only your car. My problem with the first remote was it had already been coded so the scanner did not locate the new remote.

Just wanted everyone to know. The used (previously programmed remote) CAN be reprogrammed. To make a long story short... The dealer could not do it, but the Locksmith could. Just did it today. It took about 20 min to clear the old code and put the new one in.
I bought a used remote on ebay for $65 icl. shipping + $100 for reprogramming it and cutting the new valet key. Dealers price for the whole thing is $ 324. Go figure
