transmission?

Hi. Not sure if this is wrong, but when I'm stopped and a switch to the manual transmission setting, it says it's in 4th gear. Is that were it's suppose to start from at a dead stop?

I've had my Avalon Touring Sedan about 3 weeks (1200 miles) and I LOVE it, but this does concern me, as it also seems to be shifting funny all of a sudden. A bit more noticeable when going through the gears.

MPG seems to be on track 23+- all round, and near 27, 28 on the highway.

Boy I wish they would have put a coin tray in this model. I'm an on the road salesman, and forever having to dig for toll money. The coin try in my 2007 Camry was great.

Other then that, I haven't found anything I don't like about this car.

Hell if I have a good first part of the year, I think I'll look at the 2009 Limited Edition

I just order some Bridgestone WS-60 Blizzak snow tires for it. A big need here in Maine. I also ordered the WeatherTech Floor Tray rubber mats. This should help to save the carpets from all of the shit that gets put on the roads during the winter and ends up in the car while getting in and out all of the time.

The answer to your question is YES. From a dead start, the default gear is 4. Why? This is the gear with the 1:1 ratio. Sounds simple but it makes sense and protects your tranny if you're hot with the gas pedal (hot from a zero start).

Transmisson …

I'm going to check that out, I thought I had 6 gears I could shift to?

I did see the answer below, in that 4th gear is 1:1 ratio, and I understand it … thank you.

Skip,

Starting with the ’08 model, the Avalon tranny has an additional gear, the 6th, which is another overdrive for a total of two overdrives.

5th gear: 0.71:1
6th gear: 0.61:1

Third generation Avy prior to the ’08 and onward model have a lot of issues with the tranny misbehaving; seems like the car is thinking one thing and the tranny another. Oh boy, very mischievous these cars are.

In my case, it obvious that Toyota fixed all the bugs affecting their earlier transmission, since my car runs and shifts gears exceptionally well (12k miles and couting...).

Skip,

You have given me a tough one. It is way too general. If you think you have an issue with your tranny post it here. That way you are showing us a particualr path to follow.

Tranny?

Not sure, but it seems to bit a bit more noticeable when it's going through the gears. I don't doubt it's me, as the car only has 1200 miles on it, but it just seems to be a bit more noticeable when it's going into the next gear.

Also, it's more like my Camry then I'd like in that, when I'm on a hill, it rolls back a bit, and then kicks into gear, somewhat of a hard pop into gear as I give it the gas. This issue with my Camry, was fixed with a computer setting recall / update. I'm going to check and see if there is one on the Avalon.

I really do Love this car and hope these small issues are more me then the car.

I have a 2007 Avalon and it defaults to 4th gear automatically but you can tap it down so it will start in 1st gear if you want to. I bought a coin holder at an auto parts store and it works with velcro strips and I put it in the large storage compartment. It's not as good as a factory model but it does work.
