Installing aftermarket navigation radio in my 06 limited

I found the solution for everybody that wants to replace their jbl synthesis radio with an aftermarket one. You need 2 wire harness, one is to retain your climate controls and the other is to utilze the factory amp with the aftermarket radio. I did have to make a small modification to the harness for the climate controls and I took pics to help explain it. I will be installing it myself tomorrow morning and I will take more pics once it's installed. But here's the pics of the harness that I had to modify.

The picture above shows the part of the harness that plugs into the harness that is in the dash. The plug with the black tape around it is for your climate controls and the white one has your speaker wires, illumination, constant, 12v, ground, etc. I only used this plug to tie in the yellow, red, and black wires to the wire harness for the premium sound. This plug does not fit anywhere on the jbl radio and that is where the mod come in. Here's the pic of the other end of the harness that will plug into the factory radio once it's relocated out of sight.

This picture shows the other end of the harness. It used to have 2 plugs on it, but I had to take the wires out so it will work with our radios. The white plug will go in the factory radio for the climate controls. The three wires with the connectors on them connect directly into the pins on the back of the radio for the constant, 12V, and ground. Those three wire need to be connected for the climate controls to work. I've already done a quick install just to make sure everthing will work and it does so tomorrow will be the official install. Like I said, I will post pics once everthing is in.

Caution!!!!

Those with the ’08 model be prepared for some nasty results if you do this.

The head unit of the JBL system isn’t there just to play your favorite tunes. The unit also serves as a hub for some other functions of the car, including the AVC-LAN communication. In very, very simple terms, if you disrupt these circuits (all housed in the radio receiver) please start saying goodbye to

1) The ipod (and similar audio source) connection
2) The overhead microphone for voice recognition
3) …and of course, your Avy’s Bluetooth capability (the Bluetooth antenna is within the head unit)
4) Any self-diagnostic function available through the screen display (if you have the Navigation version)

I have these schematics for my car; I don’t know for fact how other Avalons are wired in this respect.

Well, I just finsihed installing the radio and everything about an hour ago. I know I said I will take pics and I will tomorrow morning. This install is for anyone without navigation, bluetooth, or factory sirius. In my 06 I don't have factory nav, bluetooth, or sirius. I bought an eclipse avn7000 and added the sirius tuner for it, and also installed a backup camera.

I assume you’re using a second monitor (screen) for your backup camera because non-GPS screen can’t handle video input.

wow good job with the DIY!!
so the avalon center console can only fit single din ?
can you still use the steering wheel controls for volume and song change and does it show up on the factory blue media screen as well?

Well, I'm sure that a double din will fit in the opening but there's no kit and it'll probably have to be custom made. I didn't buy the extra part that connects the steering wheel controls to the radio, but it is possible. Nothing from the aftermarket radio will show up on the blue screen.

ah i see, i took a look at the deck and i don't think the double din will fit without removing the panel cover, and i saw there is the single din dash kit, so i guess thats the easier route to go with. so now i have a few questions to ask if you don't mind

taking out the factory deck means removing the 6 cd thing right?
after the screen flips up does it touch the panel cover?
how does wires that connects to the factory deck connects to your new deck?
do you have the photos of the decks rear side, or any installation information?
when you shift to reverse does the screen changes to backup camera by itself? and which camera did you use?

thats all i can think of right now. hopefully you can help. Thanks!

Yeah, I probably should have taken pictures of the installation to help explain it better. Yes, the 6 cd thing is the factory radio, it is held in with 4-10mm bolts and I have it relocated in the trunk. When I first opened the screen it did hit the radio cover and wouldn't let it open up all the way. I had to unscrew the cover from the hinge and just stick it in the opening. If you look at the picture with the radio retracted you can see that the cover is sitting in further than normal. My radio can automatically switch to the camera when I put it in reverse but for it to do that I have to buy eclipse's backup camera because it has a special connector made just for it, but I got mine wired up to where I can switch to the backup camera screen at any time I'm driving not just in reverse. I bought one of those camera's the mounts over the liscence plate. Any radio that has the reverse camera hookup will automatically switch to the screen. I'll try to explain the hook up the best I can since I don't have any pics. On the back of the factory radio there are three plugs. One plug has all the speaker connections, constant, accessory, ground, etc. on it. This is the plug that the wire harness made for toyota's with the jbl systems connects to and that's what you would wire the new radio to. The next plug is a small one that connects the tape player to the radio. This one doesn't connect to anything so you will lose your tape player. The last plug is the one for the blue display screen. And that's what the harness that I took a picture of is for. Hope this helps!

I have a 2006 toyota Avalon. can you tell me what harnesses you had to get. Did you lose your climate control and the controls on the steering wheel? Is it hard to adjust the radio cover. And once you adjust it does it work the right way?
thanks
jskt

p.s. Nice job looks great.
