starting problem

my 05 corolla xrs will not start! It's below 0 and has been for two days, the car sat for three hrs. and would'nt start.I had this prob. last winter, and i put a heat lamp on the motor all day and used a torch to heat up the inside of the air box & it started right up 6 times or so. Now I tried the same thing this year and the only thing that fired was the inside of my air box catching on fire! It's got a good batt.,spark, fuel pres.,and no check engine light. If it was the maf/air temp. it would have shown a code right? It showed a couple rich cyl. last winter after I got it started, but nothing else. It starts just fine when its a little warmer out

Just guessing might be a frozen Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. This part usually bolts to the throttle body. Should have a couple of hoses running to it. A problem with this part can cause hard starting even in mild temps.

Use a hair dryer to heat the area.

Also try using some gas pedal when starting the car.

One other problem could be the cold start circuit. Typically there is a temp sensor in the coolant system that signals the computer to add more fuel when the coolant is below a certain temp. This is part of the cold start system. The sensor could be bad.

If you can pull a plug and check for gasoline. During cold start more fuel is injected. If fuel on the plugs you should be getting gas.

And check for a weak ign spark.
