door gasket repair

Recently had someone try to grab the top of the door (05 Av Limited) and all they got was the gasket and tore it loose from the door. Nothing major but about a foot or more is loose. Anyone had any experience in repair of this? Does it tuck into a groove or is it just glued back down (if so with what). I don't want to wreck the gasket or use something that will deteriorate it.

Are you referring to the door opening weatherstrip that is on the door itself? If it is not torn, you can just fit it in back into the groove, don't need to use any adhesive.

Yes that's it - I couuldn't tell if there was an actual groove to snap/slide it into or if it just was secured in place with adhesive. I'll have to take a closer look....

I think I figured it out. I guess I was expecting it to snap into the outer part of the door frame or secure at the bottom but from what I could tell it slides into a groove on the outer part of the frame but what really holds it in place is to tuck in a small lip facing the interior of the door. By doing that it keeps it from sliding back out out place and sort of wedges it between the inner and outer parts of the door.

Seems a bit prone for problems since when I looked at another door a good portion of the inner lip had already started to work itself out also. Its easy to tuck in by running your finger or nail along it but some type of snap or a dap of adhesive at the bottom would seem more secure. In any case I think I got it or now - we'll see if if that's the long term fix or just a temporary solution.

thanks for the posts - this is a good source for a new owner

Usually they stay in place without any problem, the most common cause is the weatherstrip on stuck to the body for whatever reason and got pulled out when the door is opened. You can use some glass cleaner to clean it up and apply some dry silicone spray on it, which will keep it from sticking.
