A few questions about Avalons

I will likely be purchasing a black 2005 Avalon XLS, I test drove the vehicle and I found the accerlation to be surprisingly quick, the interior is very exquisite and the road nice is superb.

I have a few questions though:

- I know that people have complained about chips on the paint - how extensive of a problem is this?

- Can someone provide a website where chrome rims can be found for the Avalon?

- The dealership lists this 2005 XLS as having a JBL Audio system, would this have even been an available option on this particular trim?

Thanks for the help.

Yes, Toyota paints chip easily, but the dealers sell small vials of "touch-up" paint, which is easy to use and seems to fill the chips OK if you are patient and use multiple thin applications.

The JBL 12-speaker audio system was standard on the Limited trim, and optional on the XLS trim in 2005.
This system has 3 speakers (1 woofer, 2 tweeters) mounted on the package shelf (between rear seat and rear window), whereas the base 9-speaker system laacks these.

FWIW - ALL late model car paint is 1) thin, 2) lead-free..... so it's softer and more prone to road damage from sand and small pebbles...... it's the price for being eco-friendly. If you are worried about the paint on the leading edges and the paint is in relatively good condition you may want to invest in a bra for the front end. There a a gazzillion of sources for chrome rims out there.... none particular come to mind but just google the key words and start researching..... till you find what you want that fits you taste and budget.

Not only does the paint chip easily, the black paint is extremely difficult to maintain. In order to maintain this paint you cannot take it through a car wash but must wash it by hand. Since i purchased my black 07 Avalon I've also purchased hundreds of dollars of detailing equipment and supplies in order to keep the finish looking great. Toyota black is one of the toughest colors to maintain as it's a non-metallic paint. If you do buy a black Avalon I would recommend visiting some auto detail forums such as Auto Geek, Autopia, Adams Polishes or Detail City to determine the best methods to maintain the finish. It's a great looking vehicle but tough to keep in pristine condition.

I have a black 07, also. Any dark color is hard to keep looking good. I've used Klasse All In One and Klasse Sealant Glaze with good results for paint protection. These products are not extremely expensive. And I've run it through car washes on numerous occasions with no problems. Toyotanation has a good Detailing & Car Care forum.
