Struts replacement

Hi all,

I took my car to an auto shop to get me brakes pads install. When they lefted the car the noticed two things: 1) one of my front struts is leaking and then the rears was checked out and also needs replacing. 2) The studs and wheel lug are rusted/corroded.

1) How long do struts last under normal driving?
2) How to the studs and wheel lug get rusted/corroded in California?

My avy is an 05 and at 55K miles. The auto shop said that it would cost $500 installed for 4 KYB "life time warrenty" struts.

Thanks in advance.

It's hard to say how long struts will last. Much of it depends on how and where the car was driven, or if there was a defect in a strut to begin with. 55k seems a bit low for a strut to fail.

Studs and wheel lugs can rust in CA the same way they do elsewhere. I'm pretty sure you wash your car - your brake rotors will get a coat of rust on them from sitting overnight just from washing the car. Unless the rust is more than surface rust (I'm talking pitting and flaking) I wouldn't worry about it.

Go get a second opinion on the struts and lugs. Your brake shop might be trying to sell you something you don't need in the first place.

I have a touring avy. Do the kyb have two different versioin like the dealership or only one part number? Do the kyb really have "lifetime" warrenty?

Early last year I was inquiring about suspension modifications because I wanted to firm up my OE Limited suspension on my 05 Ava. You are reporting that the KYB strust are stiffer than tourning. May I ask if you know this from first hand knowledge or how you would support your statement? TIA

I have a 06 avalon and I just replaced all four of my struts with the kybs. If you have a 05 or 06 made before 1/06 then it uses the same struts as the 04-06 toyota camry v6. After 1/06 it uses the same as the 07 and up camrys. I have a limited, but I already changed out my coil springs to the touring model so I guess I have a firmer ride, but I haven't really paid attention to it.

I don't have the facts on me right now about the exact production date for my '05 LTD, but I think it was April. Anyway, what I should do is replace the springs, but when I had my 2000 I replaced the struts with the Tokico HD struts and I was one happy camper. They were excellent and I recommend them highly. I guess I will have to continue driving like an old man in this car until someone steps up to the plate with an improvement, or until I dump it. Thanks for your clarification, 00avxls

You pretty much have to order the springs from the dealership or go to toyotapartsbarn.com and order springs for an avalon w/sports package to get the "sportier" suspension
