That's not good. The car is a 2005 which I bought new, but only has 34,000 miles on it. It is the first real problem I have had with the car and I am surprised that the unit has failed since I have not had any bumps, accidents, etc.
I was afraid that was going to be the case, but I found that it has started working again. It has been several days and it has been running without any error messages? I hope it lasts! Thanks for the replys.
I too started getting the E3 warning, recently. I discovered that if I turned the cruise control ON immediately after starting the car, it was fine. If I didn't remember to turn it ON until I was driving down the road, I would get E3 when attempting to turn it on. Also, if it was ON, but I would turn it off, it would not turn back on again, without stopping, putting into park, and shutting the car off. Start it, and turn the cruise ON immediately, all was good. Put 450 miles on the car yesterday, and after the last stop, noticed that it was now working as new again. Scary!

I hit a coyote in that front corner back around Thanksgiving. Had the bumper cosmetically fixed and repainted but did not get the cruise module due to the cost. It works now about about 75% of the time. Sometimes it 'sees' cars that aren't there and other times it seems to not see certain cars. Weirdest thing ... the other day it would not see the car in the left lane, but if I moved over behind the car in the right lane it saw it immediately and put on the brake. I switched lanes several times and it repeatedly would not see the one car but always saw the other. Any chance the coyote could have knocked it out of calibration and all it needs is recalibrated?
I hit a dog (actually it hit me) right in the laser place, knocking the laser do-dad out of alignment. The trim piece was poped out of the bumper and slightly damaged, but usable. The dog did not survive.
I was receiving an error message from the cruise control, so I discovered that the laser do-dad's bracket was bent, so I reached in and un-bent it the best I could. Now it will "see" cars, but only sporadically.
So...is there a way to align the laser do-dad without a bunch of expensive equipment, or does it HAVE TO go to the dealer?
(In the meantime, I've been using the cruise control in normal mode, so the laser is off.)

My problem wasn't that the laser part of the cruise wasn't working, but rather, that I couldn't even turn the cruise control on at all, once I was in gear and up to speed. If I remembered to turn it on right after starting the car, all was fine. Notice that I have been talking past tense..........because for now it has fixed itself, and is working perfectly (can you hear that sound? That is me........knocking on wood).
