Check Engine

Ah yes, the famous check engine light. I currently have 38K on my 2006. Got my first one about a year ago, after the 2nd gas fill up, it went away. Yay!

I got my 2nd check engine light about two months ago, I've been hoping that it would magically go away. I had a repair man reset my check engine light when I got a safety check, but came right back up. My gas cap is always tight with at least 3 clicks.

What are the most common problems that come with a check engine lgiht? Prices would be nice too. Just to have Toyota in Hawaii do a diag, it'll cost $135!!!!

Man that sucks. That's what you get for living in Paradise! Is there a "Pep Boys" auto supply on the island?? All cars since 1996 have the same test port and even a cheap tool can read a code. I have something called a scangauge for my Honda Pilot. It plugs into the universal connector under the dash and reads all kinds of things from rpm to speed to throttle positions to temps to mileage etc etc. I think PeP Boys will read codes for people real reasonable.
A year ago my wifes check engine light came on the avalon. It took me 5 mins to hook the scangauge into the outlet on the toyota and read the code. It took another 5 min's on the internet doing a google search and I was able to come up with the toyota service bulletin which said I need some fuel sensors and exhaust manifold mod's. Mine was done under warranty. My dealer was a little surprised I was able to do this but it was easy.
Like I said....any tool with code reading should be able to plug in the port right under your steering column. It's rediculous that a dealer would charge that much. BTW the scangauge tool costs about $150.

I bought a scanner for about $40 on Amazon, P0456 always came on. Decided to cough up the dough, and for $350 they replaced my entire air system. Not too sure what it was called, but it's been 3 days and no check engine light so far.

Just an update - check engine light came back on yesterday, took it back to toyota in hawaii and now got a phone call telling me they need to take out the fuel tank to check the charcoal canister. there is a TSV for that, but I'm not under warranty so I need to cough up the dough again.

I dropped off my car this morning, and I'm at work now. Will try to update this as soon as i hear something again. btw, it was code P0456 again.
