Watch DVD movies on nav screen

I know, "That would be illegal", and "That would be a distraction, and not safe." Spare me please.
I travel a lot, and I want to know if there is any way that I can watch DVD movies on the navigation display screen, without replacing the entire unit with aftermarket?
Since the navigation runs off of a DVD in the trunk, why can't I put a DVD movie in the player in the trunk and have it display in the dash?
Any options to that?
Regards,
Kelly

Yes, it's possible to use the Nav screen to watch DVDs, DIVX files, **** files, etc, but unfortunately, you can't just insert a disk into the drive located in the trunk. You will need a video interface, such as the one shown here:
http://www.navvideo.com/navvideo-mod...rgb_toylex.asp

I added a rear backup camera and ran the 2nd channel video input under the carpet and up into the center storage bin. A portable DVD player, or personal media player (such as the Archos 605) works fine. 10 full length films (in DIVX or **** format) will fit on an ordinary 8Gb memory card.

Ours has been working fine for 4 years (2005 Avalon). Quality of the image is excellent on the factory nav screen, particularly at night.

I have not found a way to have the audio play through the factory stereo system, nor an I interested in doing so. I prefer the viewers use earphones so the driver (me) is not distracted.

Do you have any pictures or can you provide some? I am thinking about installing a backup camera on my 05 Limited too but I would like to see some results first, especially when the camera is engaged.

I would appreciate that very, very much.

Thanks,
Greg

I had posted an installation writeup back in 2006, but didn't include any DVD screen shots. I've finally gotten around to taking some additional pictures and updated the file. The remote that is used to switch between nav and DVD display is mounted in the center console storage cover.
