2006 Avalon Filters

I don't do much of my own maintenance. Just oil changes and now filter replacement. That is why I drive a Toyota. My problem is I can't get the cover off the engine air filter. I feel sure that I could get a small increase in fuel economy by replacing this filter. It has never been replaced in 50,000+ miles. What is the secret to accessing this filter? Also, where is the best place to buy filters for this car?

Replacing the air filter isn't hard, but the airbox lid can be a pain sometimes. Unlock the 3 spring clips, lift up on the side with 2 clips, open it about 3-4" and pull towards the drivers-side fender. the lid will now be semi free and I just swap the filters out. I don't fully remove the top lid ever. also if you knock one of the vacuum lines off the front of the lid, replace before starting the car.

I buy my filters from the dealer. The oil filters are actually cheaper from the dealer, than my local; Autozone, Advance Parts or NAPA! Hope this helps.

Thanks! I was trying to get the whole cover off. The thing that threw me was the relative prices of filter service. I received a flier in the mail from my dealer that quoted ≈$20 for engine air filter and $60 for cabin air filter. I guess they are depending on ignorance. I had no problem accessing the cabin air filter and if necessary I will make my own. For now, just tapping on the driveway removed a lot of trash.

Well, I buy the cabin filters at Advance they are $19.99 by me for a Purolator cabin filter. I buy my Air filters and Oil filters at the dealership. I pay about $5 for each oil filter, and my dealer always has "buy 4, get 1 free" on oil filters.. that's just what I do.
