Clanking start

For the past month, every morning when I start my car for the first time, it seems to have a knocking problem. Like lifters not getting oil or something. After I let it run for a minute, then ease off onto the road, it quites down. In about a mile, it's gone for the day.

This morning was different. It didn't seem to want to start, and when it did start, it seemed to be missing like it jumped timing or something, then died. It was so bad I momentarily thought about getting it towed to the dealership. But I tried again, and it did start, but knocked and clanged really bad. I eased onto the road, and after a few seconds, it quited down, for the rest of the day. It's a mystery to the dealer too. He told me to bring it in one afternoon and leave it, so they could crank it the next morning and observe what it was doing.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks,

Mine sounds like noisy lifters as well. Goes away in a couple of miles. No clanking though, that sounds like a more immediate problem. I just turned 51K, and have an appointment to get the 90K recall done. If the two are related, that's a major problem. In so many ways, I miss my ultra reliable 1996 Av, especially the 170k trouble-free miles.
