Silverstar headlights

Has anyone tried using the new Sylvania Silverstar headlights in their Avalon? I find the stock halogens too dim at night and want to install them.2006 XLS

Those are definitely an upgrade from OEM bulbs, but usually don't last too long. I've heard they last anywhere from 6 months to 1 year.

I have them on my '95 and '05 Camrys. They're somewhat brighter and definitely whiter. Is it worth the extra price and reduced bulb life? For me, I don't mind. The bulbs in the '95 are going on 4-5 years old. The ones in the '05 are from around March of this year - one burned out after six months so I just replaced both. I might have accidentally touched the bulb so I dunno.

There's no harm in trying the bulb out.. Just use latex gloves while handling them. BTW I've got the original Silverstars in the '95 and the Silvestar Ultras on the '05.

I have used and have been impressed with Philips Vision Plus bulbs. I find they put more light down, and are more reliable than Silverstars. I have tried many different halogen bulbs in my time, PIAA, Hella, Nokya (eBay), Philips.. my favorite for light output are the Vision Plus'.... BUT there is one big con and the light looks like a normal headlight bulb. No "cool blue" or icy white light, just standard yellowy white light, just more of it!

BTW my Avy has HIDs. I just wish they were projector HID's, what were you thinking Toyota?!

spend a few bucks more and get a true HID setup from ddmtuning.com

right now you can get a 35watt kit for $50, which is about $10 more than a set of silverstars. and you'll have lots more light on the road

Funny< I was actually thinking of the DDM kit, right after I posted! I know many have liked them for a very inexpensive kit.

I tried the Silverstars in my MR2 and liked them so much I installed them on my Tacoma too.
Bright white light and a wide coverage. As far as longevity, I don't know yet. I've had them on the MR2 for about 6 months and on the Tacoma for about 4 months.

A "true" HID setup would not cost $50. If I switch to HIDs, I'd do a proper retrofit with projectors = $$$. Someone I know had one of those cheap HID kits which burnt out after a year so now he's back to stock 9006 bulbs. Not to mention without a proper retrofit, the glare is highly annoying.

Anyway.. To the OP: Amazon is running a pretty good deal on the Silverstars now with the $5/$10 mail in rebate. Free shipping and no tax is an added bonus. I'm thinking about ordering a spare set..

I have a "cheap" HID setup in my GS300 and it's been running for about 3 years now. VERY reliable. Maybe I just got lucky, but no problems thus far. The setup is on a stock 9006 bulb type. Just my two cents but I would try to go with the "cheap" HID kits on eBay or something. That's my plan when stock H11 fogs in my Avalon give out.
