Unintended acceleration recall

Has there been any discussion here of reasons NOT to have Toyota cut an inch off the pedal and reprogram the ECU? IOW, what's the downside? I'm thinking, will my foot tend to get caught under the pedal when moving from brake to accelerator?

I don't want to have anything done. I use the all-weather, rubber Toyota mats with the hooks and there should never be a problem. They also mentioned making the motor stop if both the brake and accelerator were pushed at the same time. I also don't want that. There are situations where you might do this; starting up on a very steep hill or in heavy traffic where you could momentarily touch both. You can stop the motor while moving just by pushing and holding the button.

If I ever have 'unintended acceleration', I like the plan of just putting the car in neutral, getting to the side of the road, and shutting it off. When I took my car in for the VVTi recall I got in the mail this week, they said they would not know what they are supposed to do for the 'floormat' recall until after the first of the year sometime. This was the service department at the dealer in Durham, NC.

I am not having anything done either. My wife and I keep the interior clean and in order. If we do have a problem, we will simply shift into neutral. If the engine over revs and the rev limiter fails. Oh well one engine. I really feel for the Toyota/Lexus engineers when the try to engineer out stupidy.

Some dealers are putting plastic zip ties from the mat to the seat in addition to the hooks if you are worried that the hooks might break. If you look at them, as long as they are in position with the hooks there is no way the pedal can catch the mat. I would also be very worried about anything that would shut off the motor with both accelerator and brake depressed. On my 2001 Avy it had a dirty throttle body that wouldn't let the car idle after starting until it really warmed up so you had to drive holding the throtle a little open even when stopped with the brake on. Had to be started with the pedal held down and the brake on also so that would have meant it would not have been able to get it started and driven to the dealer. What a pia!

Night Line did a story on this in the latter part of '09.

The cases reviewed in that TV broadcast had absolutely nothing to do with floor mats/accelerator pedals.

Toyota has an ECU or similar issue and they do not want to own up to it.

I agree with you Mike to a degree. But I don't trust the media either. See I can take 1000 reports of SUA and not tell the general public that several of those admitted to floor mat entrapment, stepping on the wrong pedal, etc.

So when I do my news story I show you 3 or 4 cases of people that have had it happen, can prove it was NOT floor mats, I have them tell their terrifying ordeal and how they have never experienced anything like it before and how they want something done so innocent people don't die, they'll cry, they'll be angry, they'll call for the head of the Toyota President (see add all those histrionics that don't mean jack shit as far as whether or not there is a problem) and then I say in my story that along with these 3 or 4 people we interviewed there are 1000 more complaints of SUA. See now it makes it look like ALL the complaints are a ECU problem.

See how the media works. I personally trust Toyota more than the media, although that is like saying it's better to drown than to burn at the stake.

Eskymi, I agree completely. I do not trust the "media " in any way. They care more for a good line to get attention than the truth,
