Tire Suggestions?

I am looking for my g/f's 06 Avalon Touring. We are looking for a "Best Buy" tire. I want a good all season tire that does well in the snow. She drives mostly interstate, but we live in Sunny Rochester, NY; "Home of the Snow Belt". As long as it can run well in the snow, last a while, doesn't hurt gas milage, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg, we are happy. Tire size is apparently 215/55-17.

Thanks in advanced,

I think you just described the factory spec Michelin. I'm on my second set and if I keep the car long enough I'll get another set.

Snow - check
Rain - check
Long lasting - check
Quiet running - check
Comfortable ride - check
Good gas mileage - check
Arm & a leg - well... you want quality you sometimes gotta pay for it

Michelin Primacy 60K mileage warranty. Michelin said its the replacement for the Energy. Got them at Discount Tire for $600 out the door including road hazzard warranty and free rotation. Very satisfied so far. Much better specs than original Michelin Energy which had no mileage warranty.

Primacy

I have had the Mechelin Primacy tires on my 07 Avalon for about a year (20,000 miles) with no issues. I went through the factory Energy tires way to quick!

I would check on tirerack.com. I've been getting my tires there and I'll definitely be getting them for Avalon soon. I think I'm gonna go with the General Exclaim UHPs, but I live in Florida and don't consider the snow performance...Just my two cents.

I can tell you what not to get.

Bridgestone HP550 - supplied by Sears.

Wife's '06 Avalon came with Bridgestone RE-92. Got about 75K out of these.

Gas mileage fell off substantially with the Bridgestone HP550s.

Next time it's Michelin or back to Bridgestone RE-92.

I just replaced my stock worn turanza with the michelin primacy mxv4s and took a 1000 mile trip. I really like them so far. They seem to be quite quiet. The handling, braking, and the ride is noticeably better. However, I bought the car used at 32K so I never felt the turanzas new. Consumer reports gave them a much better mark then the turanzas as well.

After a mail in rebate and AAA discount I paid about $710 for the set at Discount Tire.

Does anyone know if you have stick to 215 55R17? When I was shopping it didn't occur to me that I might be able to get a different width. Some popular tires don't seem to be made in 215 55R17.

A word of caution, I did get a speeding ticket about 15 miles into the trip which I blame on that nice new grippy feeling.

I was thinking about going to 225 55 17 but am afraid there may be rubbing in the front wheel well during u-turns, etc. I wonder if they would fit? Any thoughts? It is only slightly wider.

I live in the land of rain (Washington) and I have zero problems with the MXV4s. Ice? Dunno. Snow - I think they're pretty good as far as all-season tires go.

Just make sure you get the primacy mxv4 and dont get stuck with the energy mxv4 s8. The energy's are crap, and are the one of the OE tires on the car. Not only are the primacy's cheaper, they have a better treadwear rating, and have much better reviews on tireack.

Only 4.5 would buy the mxv4 s8 again vs 8.3 for the primacy on a score of 10.

Here's the way (formula?) to get correct size so tires don't revolve significantly more or less per mile, which would throw off your speedometer, odometer, computer, etc.

If OEM is 215x55x17
215 = width of tire
55 = height of sidewall
17 = diameter of wheel tire sits on

... 215 x 55 = 11825
if you want wider tire then you need to cut down sidewall height -
next step down is 50 series:

11825/50 = 236.5 so if you can find a 235x50x17 tire, it will work.
also for 45 series
11825/45 = 262.7 so a hypothetical 260x45x17 -- or maybe 265x45x17 would work.

HOWEVER - using wider tires is limited by the width of the rim you are using.
If rim is say 6" wide then maximum width of tires you can use might be 195,
6.5" perhaps 225, 7" perhaps 240 ???
You'll need to look up what the car came with and what maximum is.

ALSO remember that shorter the sidewall, the stiffer the ride, and that potholes are more liable to damage tire and/or wheel with "short" sidewall..
