new recall started this morning

wife just had the avalon in for the acclerator shim fix, and the guy said she would have to come back next week because there is a 2nd recall going on for the "pedal", and he did not have the new parts. Said it just started this morning, and he was calling everyone back that had the pedal shim fix done.

Anyone know the technical details

It might be the floor mat/pedal recall. I got a letter on this a while back which said they would contact me when they decided what to do. I got the shim fix a couple of weeks ago and the Toyota service department didn't know of any other official recall at that time. I'm not going to bother with the floor mat fix. if would be a waste of time. I put in the rubber, all weather mats when the car was new and they work perfectly.

It is the floor mat recall. If you have the CTS pedal, which you must have had, they put the shim in. Then under the floor mat recall they will shape the pedal (making it smaller, but it's hardly noticable unless you are very anal about stuff), they'll reconfigure the floor and flash the ECU with a brake override in case you do experience SUA, this will slow the car as it's designed to over ride the throttle. And it works. You can try it when it's done. Just step on the gas, get going about 50-60mph and while holding the gas, hit the brake and the car will slow like normally. Just remember to let off the gas before removing your foot from the brake otherwise the car will take off.

Does the brake override work only at high speeds or even when you're sitting still?

I think it's 30mph or higher, this way you can still brake and gas at slower speeds for whatever purpose necessary. It makes sense anyway as if the throttle sticks the car will be going faster than 30 by the time you hit the brake.

Thanks for the info. If that's the case I may have it done, although, I may not have the pedal ground off. I'm a goofyfooter (brake left foot, gas right foot) so I was concerned about hitting the brake and pedal at the same time at a stop when going up a steep hill.

I got my 2006 Toyota Avalon Limited back from the dealer today. They took care of these issues:

1. VVTi Oil Hose
2. Installing shims for the accelerator pedal
3. Reshaping the accelerator pedal
4. Reflash ECU to add safety mechanism where brake overrides throttle

My car drives like it did before, but I haven't tried out the override feature yet. Also, it is visually obvious that the accelerator pedal was put to a grinder. It doesn't look very nice, but I guess it's all for the sake of safety.

Just a couple questions, did they tell you that your "modified" pedal will be replaced with a redesigned unit at a later date? This is what I have heard from a few different sources that will happen after they modify the pedals.

Is it possible to post a pic here or send me a pic of your pedal via E-Mail?

I am trying to decide whether or not to have it done, I don't want some ground up piece of crap for a pedal, with gouged out spot under the carpet as well.

Thanks

pedal recall

I keep reading about the Avalon floor being "reconfigured". What, exactly, does this mean? Is it cut out? Has anyone actually had this procedure done? I have real trepidation about letting Toyota do this. I have a vinyl aftermarket
AWM over my carpeted mat w/o any issues.
