USA Add navigation

Since the 2008 Toyota Avalon comes with the trip computer, the same (trip computer) screen that displays the navigation. Since my vehicle doesn't come with navigation, is there anyway a navigation can be added and have that screen display maps.

If so, how much does it usually goes and would it be better to go for an in-dash navigation or separate GPS such as Garmin, TomTom etc?

And my second question is..

I bought my vehicle yesterday, it's toyota certified and has almost 45,600 miles on it. Is there anyway I can extend my warranty and if so, what plan am I eligible for and how much does it cost (ballpark)? I'm interested in 7yr/100k miles. Is that the farthest one can go (7yr/100k miles)?

Go buy a Garmin. The factory navigation in the Avalon is CRAP! I paid $2000 for the useless option and I have wished I had not thrown the money away.

Thanks for the reply jimhuey,

I never thought in a million years that anything Avalon have to offer would be "CRAP".

Do you have a specific Garmin in mind?

Any of the nuvi series are pretty good. The avalon nav isnt terrible, but its not great, and on the newer models the override was removed so you have to stop to do just about anything which is very very annoying.

I would go with one of the portables (gaemin, tomtom, etc). I was a dealership this weekend and they were advertising the update cd for the naviagation system for $199 and that was suppose to be on sale. In picking the portable go online and get familiar with the features you want in one and then go to best buy or some other store and check them out.

I drove from Nashville to New Orleans yesterday. I had my Garmin Nuvi 760 on the dash as well as the factory navigation on. The detail and information on the Garmin was far ahead of the factory system. The worst part of the factory system is the "supposed" voice recognition. It DOES NOT understand English.
Other than the nav, I really like the car. I got almost 32 mpg for the trip. That was indicated and also figured manually. That was driving 70-75 mph. Comfort and power are great.
