Arrow Check engine light

My moms 05 Avalon had the check engine light come on. Brought it to autozone and had codes read and came up with

"Ignition coil D primary/secondary circuit fault.
Probable cause
Open or short circuit condition
Ignition system fault
Faulty ignition coil"

Where should I start?

Im a older Ford guy and have never even taken the cover off this engine before.

Thanks

Others on this forum have reported ignition coil failures.

Go back to the forum thread list and click on "search this forum" at the upper right of the list. Search for the word "coil" (without the quotation marks). Open and read the message threads that contain any of the following in the title: PO353; PO354; P300.

My mom called me today and said it started missing on her while she was driving to work (40 miles 1 way)

Tried to get a new coil but all auto parts stores have to order it. Will it be okay missing for a 40 mile drive home?

Guess she will be driving the good ol Lightning to work tomorrow lol

Couldn't find much info doing searches on here.

IF the engine control computer disables the fuel injector for the cylinder with the misfire, you will be OK to drive the car. However, if not, raw fuel in the exhaust will cause one of the catalytic converters to glow a nice cherry red, and probably be damaged (lots of $$$ to replace). I would not take the risk of a 40 mile drive without the advice of a knowledgeable Toyota technician.

There are 6 spark coils, one for each cylinder, and mounted directly above the spark plugs, The 3 closest to the windshield require removal of some of the intake manifold assembly to access . . . not a "field repair". The 3 closest to the front of the car are easy to access.

Reading these 3 posts in this forum will give you information on how to determine which cylinder is missing. I have not searched the Camry forum, but expect there are relevant posts there as well.

2005 avalon cylinder misfire p0300 p0301 p0302 p0304 p0305 58,000 miles check engine

HELP!! engine light on!!07Camry3.5

p0354 coil location

Okay but I still am not getting any answer on a fix for this.

Well I pulled the COP for #4 off and it looked fine put it back on and make sure it was on good. Disconnected the battery to clear the code and took it for a test drive and it was fine under 60 mph then when I got on the highway the CEL came on again. But it never missed on me. So I got on it and stuff trying to get something and it wouldn't miss or run bad or anything.. Ill go have to code checked again to be sure.

Well still the same code. I dont know if I should spend the $112 on a coil and hope it fixes it or not.

The coils are easily swappable. Move the suspected coil to another position. The next CEL should tell you if its the coil or not.

Okay swapped the #4 coil to #6(?) and it threw a code again and now its coil F instead of D so Looks like it is a bad coil. Going to order a new one tonight.

Any brand I should go with? Orileys has one for $85.

We used www.rockauto.com to purchase the coils for my Avalon. I got 2 for $112 including shipping, half of what they were in town. We have purchased many parts from them and no problem, good service.

Check Engine Light

My 2005 Avalon has the following codes.

353 Random engine misfire
301-306 Cyl misfire

I have replaced 2 coils because that was the codes originally, did not make a difference.

Checked the PCM connections
Cleaned the MAP Sensor

Going to try another code scanner today.

Any suggestions?

Toyota generally uses what I call a "Primary" and "Backup" misfire detection scheme.
The "Primary" detector monitors the primary winding current of each spark coil, for each and every spark event. If this current is too high or too low, a fault code is set (301, 302, etc) that identifies the specific coil or coils with the out-of-limits current. If the current is "way" out of limits, the fuel will be cut to that cylinder, to protect the catalytic converter, creating a noticable miss or skip at low RPMs.

"Backup" detection is accomplished by checking for a slight increase in instantaneous engine RPM immediately after each spark plug fires. When this increase is not detected, a code is set (such as 353) that is not cylinder-specific, particularly so when the problem is irregular and/or random.

I've interpreted your message to mean you initially had a "Primary" fault code implicating 1 or 2 spark coils, which you replaced, and now you have a "Backup" fault code.

My best guess is one of the following:
The weak spark coil (or coils) caused the related spark plugs to become fouled.
You or your mechanic did not apply dielectric grease to the new spark coil boots, and some arcing to the engine is occurring in the spark plug wells. This would be more noticeable when the humidity is high and the engine is under load.

You can test both theories by removing and inspecting the spark plugs under the new coils, and applying a film of high-temperature dielectric grease where the end of the boot contacts the body of the plug.

Source of this information is the Toyota ingition diagnostics training manual. I am not a mechanic, but design some of the electroniuc components used within spark coils.
