2011 Avalon Ipod Connection Problem

I just purchased a 2011 Avalon Limited and the manual states that the USB Port can be used to enable use & control of an Ipod through the radio. When I connect my generation 5.5 Ipod to the USB port with the original Apple cable, the radio does not recognize the Ipod. The radio does not even list Ipod as a Mode Option (as the manual states it should). The dealer stated that I should use the original Ipod cable (which I did).

The Ipod will play through the Aux Port with control from the Ipod.

Does anyone know the secret to fix this problem

PROBLEM SOLVED ! I took my 2011 Limited to the dealer and they found a loose connection. Now my Gen 5.5 30GB Ipod works properly through the USB Port.

I also have the same problem in the 2011 Avalon. I was also told the Ipod would work.
I have found the Ipod touch and Iphone do not work. However when I use an older Ipod Nano it works just fine.
I too would like to know if there is a fix for the later generation Ipod devices.

My Ipod is the last hard drive model before they came out with the Classic (~3 yrs old). You've given me a new idea, as I will try my daughters Nano to see if that makes a difference.

I also sent a question in to Toyota and hopefully someone can provide an answer to this problem.

Thanks !

Just got my 2010 Avalon 5 days ago and my iPod Touch 2nd generation work just fine. It works both the USB cable and with Bluetooth. The USB button on the audio becomes active and when selected works great. You can contol the iPod functions (volume, skip song, repeat etc) from the car radio controls.

Beetee, My Avalon is a 2011 and the radio does not recognize anything I plug into the USB port. Because it does not recognize a device is plugged in, it therefore does not provide any Ipod or Flash Drive control options on the radio control screen.

The only thing which I have done, which I believe possibly cause this problem, is the way I paired my phone to the car. The radio has two choices to pair a phone ( bluetooth audio or phone only). The car would not recognize my phone if I tried to pair "phone only". I therefore tried the audio approach and it did pair the phone properly. Now the radio typically shows bluetooth indication in the upper right corner.

How did you pair your phone ?

Thanks !

xxwash,
I have tried a gen 5.5 Ipod, Nano & Flash Drive with no indication of recognition by the radio, and therefore no control options show on the screen.

The only thing which I have done that could affect this is the way I had to pair my phone. The car would not pair in the "phone only" approach, so I tried the Audio pair approach and the phone paired correctly.

Now the radio typically shows bluetooth indication in the right corner of the screen.

I attempted to pair my I phone per the manual to be setup as a audio device and use it as a phone. I can not make that work because when I setup the audio device it removes the phone and visa versa.
I eventually gave up on the bluetooth audio option and set the Iphone to phone only.

I too have a 2011 limited with Nav. I have hooked up a thumb drive to the USB port and it works fine. Not a lot of functionality as far as jumping around from folder to folder or song to song. The controls through the head unit are clumsy but the drive works and plays MP3’s fine. I don’t own a Ipod (I Know, archaic). I have a Sandisk Sansa, but that doesn’t work nor is it advertised to. If your system isn’t recognizing a thumb drive, I’d say take it to the dealer and get it fixed.

I found the following information on the JBL Synthesis website:

iPod Compatibility-Audio only supported for all iPod "docking connector" models, including third-generation and later Click Wheel iPods, iPod photo (audio playback only), iPod mini and iPod nano. Not compatible with iPod shuffle™. iPod not included.

The iPod Touch and iPhone are not mentioned so they are probably not compatible.
Maybe the "iPod feature" is being slightly overhyped.
Most likely the sales people are not aware some models of iPod are compatible and some are not.
