I recently bought a 2006 Avalon and I noticed that after parking when I pull out I hear a clicking noise that only lasts briefly and it only happens right after I start it up and pull out. Is this normal? Does it have something to do with the breaks or axle system?
what model? where is the noise coming from? when you park your car, did you put the brake on then moved to park? If I do that, sometime I can feel a "moving" noise. Try to put your car into "P" then put on the brake and see if it makes a different.
Again, not sure we are talking about the same noise though

It's the XL model. It doesn't really sound odd, almost like a pump is prepping or dull sounding clicks, for about 1 second and then it doesn't happen again until I turn it off, and get back in and take off like in the morning or after visiting a store.
I'm assuming you're talking about when you first turn on the ignition, for a second or two you'll hear a clicking or whirring sound. If that's what you're asking - I would tend to think it's the fuel pump pressurizing the fuel system.
If we're talking about when the car is in motion - I'll need a better description from you.
potential clarity. My 2007 XLS starts and prior to any shift, brake, barely off the key (and it's not the fuel pump in the dash.) Sounds like the climate control is motoring doors into position. Noise to me sounds like a spring. Switching temps hi/low and output floor/vent/defrost can get slight noises of the same. But the most obvious is the first, seemingly initializing the baffles.
It's not the fuel pump, I'm pretty sure it does it after the engine starts and while I am pulling out so the car is moving. I'll pay better attention to it when I leave today and see if I noticed anything else.
One thought - does the sound only occur when the wheels are turned left or right from center as you drive away? If that's the case you may have an issue in the CV Joint on one side or the other (or both). With the wheels pointed straight ahead you're less likely to hear a sound from a failing CV Joint.
"Initial Check:
After the ignition is turned ON, and the vehicle attains an approximate speed of 6 km/h (4 mph) or more, only at first time, the Skid Control ECU performs an initial check.
The functions of each solenoid valve and pump motor in the brake actuator are checked in order."

I've never noticed this check. But I always have radio or CD player on. Some folks are more sensitive to certain sounds than others.
I have the same clicking sound on my Venza. There is a thread that talks about the clicking sound on the Venza fourm, and everyone says that it is the abs/ traction control resetting. Ever time you put your car in reverse, then back into drive you should hear it. I really didn't pay much attention to it on my avalon, but my wife was very concern after buying a new venza, and hearing it ever time she backs out the driveway, then goes forward, and she would hear the "click" sound.

Mine (06 Touring) does the same thing - however as far as I know I do not have traction control or if I do there is no "disable" button. I just bought mine last week.
odd, we noticed that on our 06 Touring after we bought it. No one could give us a good answer. What happens with us is it is about three clicks/clunks really quicly. It only happens when we start the car and backup. It doesn't make the sound again, until we turn the car off and go into reverse. It sounds like it is coming from the rear passenger side near the wheel.
