Does anyone out there have a 2011 limited Avalon? With the smart key I just get in the vehicle and put my foot on the brake and press the start/stop button and the car starts up.
My question is this.........what kind of sound does it make when you press the button to start the car? Mine has a sort of sound that seems to come from inside the base of the steering wheel. I assume this is normal. It's kind of a quick buzz sound and then the car starts immediately.
Is it supposed to make that sound? Is that normal?
Yes it is normal, and yes it is the steering wheel unlocking. When the car is completely off turn the wheel until it locks. Then turn the car on....you will see the steering wheel shudder a bit and then you can turn it normally. All Smart Key cars do this.

I'd explain how it's the gerbil climbing into the wheel that provides the auto climate control - but, as the guys above explained, it's the steering wheel unlocking.
