2011 Avalon Limited Ipod problem.

I have a 2011 Avalon Limited and I want to use an Ipod with it. According to the manual I just have to plug in the ipod in the USB port which is under the arm rest and it is supposed to work. I have a model M9282LL iPod. The iPod is this model from 2004:

When I plug it into the USB port the iPod displays a circle with a line through it and the iPod is then inoperable. The JBL Nav counsel in the Avalon shows nothing. It doesn't appear to recognize the iPod.

Does anyone here know how I can get this to work? Maybe the iPod is too old. If so.....I will buy a new one......but......before I do that if I can get this one to work it would be great.
