USA tpms dash light

Hope this helps someone. My wife told me that she had an odd light on the dashboard ever since we had new tires put on her car, a 2007 Avalon. I checked and it was the TPMS WARNING LIGHT. I checked all of the new tires for air pressure and they all seemed to be fine, went to the shop that put the tires on and they checked the pressure monitors and indicated that they were working fine. Still could not get the light to go off so I went to the dealer, explained what was going on, he had someone check it and in a few minutes told me the car was ready. I asked what the problem was and he told me the spare tire was a bit low on air and that the spare also has a pressure monitor in it. So I guess the moral of the story is to check the spare as well as the 4 tires on the ground when you are checking the tire pressure!!!!

Yup. I had a bolt in my tire and I put the spare on, and the light was still complaining. The full size spare is supposed to be used in the rotation schedule of the tires, so they have 5 tpms sensors per vehicle. Nice, but catches people off guard sometimes.

I was wondering why the light wouldn't turn off, just filled up the spare and like magic, the the light turned off.

Toyota actually doesn't require you to use the 5th tire in the rotation and at many dealers will charge you extra (esp. for a Tacoma, Tundra or Highlander with the full size spare tucked under the vehicle), although it is an option to do so. Keep in mind that if you do use the 5th tire in rotation your spare will get worn down as well.

was the spare in use when the light is on? If so, how come the tire guy didn't catch it from the store?

I had the same light come on recently and after checking all tires, took it to the local tire store, where they could find nothing wrong. The manager checked the manual and found a reset button under the dash. Problem solved. His take on it was a difference in day/night air temperature could be the reason for the light coming on.

Every time you top off the tires with air you need to reset it. It doesn't measure the actual proper psi, it measures the differential between last reset and current pressure, and turns the light on after a certain % difference below last reset is reached.
